“Hotel Like a Masterpiece”
Reviewed May 29, 2012

What a breath-taking hotel!
Bed-linen Rivolta Carmignani, L'Occitane toiletries, Nutella chocolate and fresh orange or grapefruit juices upon individual order at breakfast.
Free minibar, high standard food at breakfast and dinner, valet parking.
But above all, very chic and design rooms with stylish decor and all modern facilities, superb glass-walled bathrooms with great bath, shower and bidet (even with a live flower!), and double-glazed windows stopping the noise from the main street below, but allowing a beautiful view of the castle Ljubljanski grad above the city.
In addition professional housekeeping two times daily, kind and helpful staff at the reception and restaurant/breakfast room, fast check-in and check-out.
Location of the hotel is right in the very center of Ljubljana and only five or ten-minute walk to every sight or place of interest. In front of the hotel itself there are two prepaid by the hotel parking spaces in the street Erjavceva cesta, where you leave or get your car - the rest is hotel staff's concern.

Actually we found out that Cubo was the right choice already when we had to change our reservation and sent an email to them. We were impressed by the prompt reply of Luka, his wish to accommodate our requests and the remarkable flexibility of this hotel.

I know that Cubo has been one of the best restaurants in Ljubljana for a long time and they have even published two cookery books already. Maybe it is time for a book about the art of creating and managing hotels now?

First, a big thanks for a great review. Honestly, the review is so nice that we had an internal memo asking if someone from the staff wrote it :-)
The only thing we can add is that we will continue to do everything that we can to satisfy our guests and will always be happy when they will appreciate our efforts.

We stumbled upon this chic hotel in Ljubjana and were happy that we did. It was visually very appealing and just as comfortable. Perhaps the best feature was the restaurant which was superb. The fish in Slovenia was splendid and this restaurant at the hotel was very sophisticated. Our meal there was one of the highlights of Slovenia.

This hotel was recently renovated. The rooms are nice and big with everything you need. Staff are all friendly, spoke good english and were very helpfull. Location is very good one just have to cross the street to the wonderful old town. Breakfast was nice with a good selection. I would go back to Slovenia and this hotel as soon as I get a chance

First, Ljubljana is a great charming city and Slovenia a wonderful country to explore. We had a surprisingly fun time.
But forget all that... Go just to stay at Hotel Cubo. Everything about this hotel worked, the only complaint might be that we couldn't get the room cool enough at night, and heard someone else complain at the desk that their room was too cold.
We arranged for an airport transfer with the hotel which we strongly recommend.
Everyone who works there was extremely friendly and helpful - reception, driver, restaurant, and even the cleaners. The room was very comfortable, finished to the highest standards, and very clean. Some people have said they didn't like the rooms for whatever reason. We loved them - look closer - it was beautiful tile, carpets, bed spreads, don't need to go on and on.
The breakfast was great. Fresh pastries, fruit, and a small menu to order some eggs.
And to those that complain about the TV - Why turn it on? Go out and experience the city! If you complain about the modern design - did you not look at the pictures fo the hotel before you booked?
Every boutigue hotel should take lessons from Hotel Cubo.

Rooms are well design, modern, contemporary, grey. Very nice ensuite bathroom with glass wall. However there is no touch at all of local culture: this kind room could be anywhere in the world. A small Slovenian contemporary painting or a flower/bouquet would have humanized and brought some needed warmth to the room. The size of the room was correct. Nice bathroom, except the water from the shower drops easily on the floor at the bottom of the glass.

The view was very disappointed, since we had a view on a future construction site!! (that important point should have been of course mentioned before booking). Of course, we could see the top of the castle on the small hill.

In addition it was noisy even with double glazing windows: I could not sleep well the second night. Be aware that a major city road is just at the foot of the hotel.

TV: it was very slow to move from one channel to another one. However it was surprising to access there several sex channels without any security code.

Wi-Fi included.

Fitness room was no more present.

Breakfast is nice. However not a Slovenian touch at all.

Their only restaurant advise was not a good one at all.

We mentioned at our booking that we were on a wedding trip anniversary. However we got any special word, or given note/letter/flower…

However, as it was my birthday (they knew while scanning my ID at check-in) I got one nice chocolate cake portion.

Very expensive rooms: only if you get a large discount.

At final check-out, management did a gesture and gave us a small appreciated discount. This shows that with some improvements, this hotel could certainly be a very nice 5/5 in the near future.

Room Tip: Very expensive rooms: only if you get a large discount.

This is the first "average" mark that we got, so we feel the need to respond even more.
- "Slovenian touch", a contemporary Slovenian painting: paintings by a renowned Slovenian Ivo Mršnik are in every room; at the time of this stay, there was also an exhibition of paintings by young Slovenian painters that were hung in the 1st floor
- "a flower/bouquet": there is a small live pine tree (typical for Slovenia) in the bathroom; we prefer flowers and plants in pots to bouquets since this is more ecological and sustainable
- Yes, there is a view to the future construction site from the rooms that face the Ljubljana castle. The delay is caused by archeological excavations since remains from the Roman empire were found there. At the time of booking, rooms are not assigned unless there are special requests. If our guests do not like the view (castle, inner court), room configuration or anything else, we are always offer to change the room. This has been done in this case as well, but the guest declined the offer.
- Several guests mentioned noise (or absence of it) from the street - some don't hear it, some prefer even quieter room. Again, a change can always be made (of course subject to room availability).
- We have an Internet TV, so the speed of channel switch is a bit slower than with the standard cable TV. However, this gives the guests more than 140 free TV channels in all languages.
- We don't know whether the surprise by free adult channels was a good or a bad one :-) Joke aside, there is a function of blocking unwanted programs by the guests. We feel that this is a better alternative to guests having to ask the reception to unlock certain program groups.
- Fitness room is not present yet (and not "no more"). We are still constructing it, so it is not advertised anywhere.
- We don't know what "Slovenian touch" at breakfast should be apart from what we offer. There is Karst prosciutto (Slovenian specialty, similar to Parma ham), Slovenian honey, buckwheat bread with walnuts (Slovenian specialty) offered. We make our jams from Slovenian fruit. Overall, we strive to serve a variety of fresh dishes, prepared daily in our kitchen (e.g. home made pate, cinnamon pastry, croissants, etc.)
- The guest asked for a restaurant that serves typical Slovenian food in authentic environment. There is only one such restaurant in Ljubljana, so it was the only choice.
- Forgetting guest's anniversary was our fault. We apologised and gave the guest a discount for the stay.
- As for the price - most our bookings are done through on-line systems and the price (which is market-driven) is no surprise. We do not have an intention to be a cheap hotel, but certainly work hard to offer a superior price/performance ratio. We believe that a vast majority of our guests' reviews confirms that.

After staying in 8 hotels in a 3 week period, I'd have to say that Hotel Cubo was the best of the lot. The people who work there (and I mean everyone....reception, restaurant, etc.) are exceptionally nice. And the stuff in the mini bar was free??? What?? who does that? Even as I left, one of the hotel employees offered me a ride to the train station. The location couldn't be beat. I truly loved my time in Ljubljana, and this hotel played a big part in that enjoyment. I could walk to the train/bus station, the sights and restaurants are all right where the hotel is, and the room was really cool. It was trendy without being over the top. The bathroom freaked me out a bit, but since I was on my own, it was fine. Another reviewer mentioned they do have traditional rooms if you prefer. (The bathroom has glass walls. There are wooden doors that slide into place to cover up most but not all the glass.)

Room Tip: I am a heavy sleeper, so I didn't notice this, but another guest as I was checking out mentioned...

What a great place - Ljubljana, the friendly city. This is a fantastic hotel. We were upgraded to a huge room on the third floor with a big round bed set within curved bay windows. The service, breakfast and location were all excellent.
