I was directed to this restaurant from hotel staff at which I was staying and have to say this is one of the best restaurants that I have had a meal at. It was so good 2 nights in a row I was there and if was not leaving the city would have gone back. Staff are all excellent speak good English and go out of there way to make you feel welcome. Food was so good I could not find a fault with any of it. Really worth a visit if you are in Ljubljana

We visited Spajza on our first day in Slovenia. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere with an outside dining area and tables inside. There were lots of little birds in the garden which was lovely and we felt very welcome. We were given a little sample from the kitchen which had horse cheek with it which was a bit of a novelty for us. I ordered mushroom gnocchi which was not the best I have tasted but was full of flavour and was a big portion for a starter. Two other people in our party ordered Octopus which they really enjoyed and would recommend. Drinks options are slightly limited and there is no option to have a diet drink.

Overall we paid just over 90 euros for 2 mains and 2 starters (ordered as mains) with some alcohol- not a cheap choice but would be good for a special occasion.

Our children were very unexcited about us insisting we eat at this Slovenian food only restaurant but all ended up exclaiming about the food. We had the €11 set lunch menu although there was a limited choice within it. Everybody liked the mushroom soup to begin (even our daughter who hates mushrooms!) although the highlight for us all was the risotto with monkfish which followed. The main course was either codfish or sausage, the fish being generally preferred with everybody loving the blueberry and apple strudel to finish. The waiter recommended Sauvignon was wonderful if somewhat expensive but overall the cost was acceptable for a meal of such high quality. We ate inside and loved the rustic, cosy interior while enjoying the starched white linen and sparkling glassware. Good, prompt service without any feeling of being rushed and no
pretensions which is always a bonus for us!

One consideration should be given. The temperature in Ljubljana was in the upper 30's during the day and still very warm in the evening. The presentation was little over the top, more like a 5* gourmet evening than a good local restaurant. The courses were the right size and there were several of them and the accompanying wine changes were well handled. The food was good and the service excellent. There is better value for money but the experience was good. Go when you feel like being fussed over not because your hungry.

Overpriced meats and seafood - not Slovenian. Very few diners- seemed to be mainly tourists recommended by my hotel; hot courtyard - needs a fan for air circulation. Charged 16 euro for a half liter of 222 euro wine.
