Ok, I will get my one silly little complaint out of the way early. I was seated, with half of our party of seven, on a nearly unpadded, narrow wooden bench which backed up against a radiator. For a lunch, this would have been fine, but for an intentionally leisurely multi-course meal, parts of me were uncomfortable. To be fair, I didn't ask for assistance from the staff.
Everything else was terrific, and we will be back, but sitting at a different table. Our party had two of the five course tasting menus. The cost was 35 to 38 Euros, a very reasonable price for top flight cuisine. Dinner for 7 with a bottle of wine was around 250 Euros. In this review I really strain at a gnat to find anything to complain about. If pressed, I would only say that the fish menu could have benefitted from one course that featured a filet of a regular fish rather than the multiple squid-octopus-shrimp selections. But each course was appropriately portioned as part of a five course meal, tasty, and artfully presented. My wife ordered the meat menu and was wowed by each course. One of the teenage members of the party ordered a steak with a sauce, and the aroma from the other end of the table was sublime. I will be trying that next time.
The service was of the highest quality. Our waiter was friendly, joked with us, and was serious when the circumstances called for it. He sensed the pace of service that went with the social interaction that was going on, and the tone of the group and responded in kind. We neither felt rushed or abandoned. His wine recommendations helpfully provided a range of costs, and he was not pushing a more expensive wine. We truly felt his desire was for us to have a memorable evening, and did everything he could to make it happen.
In retrospect, I was thinking of what a degustation menu would cost in any of Slovenia's neighboring countries, and with the prices and quality of Spajza, I found another reason to be grateful to be living in this beautiful country for a few years.
Although the weather did not pemit it in our case, I understand Spajza has a wonderful outdoor dining area as well.
