“For horse lovers, golfers, gamblers and others”

My wife and I stayed there for a week and took riding lessons. The hotel was nice and clean, the staff courteous and helpful. The half-board food was simple but OK. This is not France or Italy. The local wines are simple and rustic, almost any wine in Italy tastes better. (BYOW)
We had selected group-lessons which turned out to be not the best choice. There are some very talented instructors there but they were not used for the group-lessons, seemingly.
This centuries old horse breeding facility has a prodigious history, read up before arriving. Loads of people arrive daily from Italy and elsewhere for the gambling, and many come to watch the horse show., very few come to ride. (I disagree with another report that the US based traveling Lipizzaner show is better, it is not. Not one of the US-Lipizzaner could perform a piaffe, and could barely do a passage.)
May was a good month weather wise, trail rides were fun but the horses spooked easily, and in concert.
The place was very nice, the surroundings beautiful. Trieste, (2-hours from Venice, trains every hour), is a super nice historic roman city, and is only a 25-euro cab fare away. Slovenia has the best lime stone caves on the planet, a must see to believe. There are some close to the hotel but the ones in Postojna are incredible.
Overall Slovenia was very pleasant, the country was beautiful, the people congenial, the food was good, and the prices reasonable. (2007)

Two couples stayed here late September 2007. We selected it because of the Lipizzaner stud farm. Our rooms were nice & large with balconies (although the view wasn't much). Even the towels had the horse theme. We paid 16 euro per person to see a 35-minute performance & get a walking tour of the stud farm. The performance was a bit disappointing; I guess we expected something more like what we see in the US at Lipizzaner touring shows. We opted for half board because the farm is out in the country. Dinner was what the tour groups got - not very tasty with packaged potato puffs & nondescript meat, although the salad bar & dessert choices were a plus. The breakfast buffet was much better with quite an assortment of breads, cereal, juices, meat, cheese, fruit, etc. When I made the reservation, I inquired about trail riding. The clerk emailed me that trail riding was only available in the summer. Fortunately, I asked upon arrival & got put in touch with the 'barn lady' who said I could 'hack' in the morning. They usually prefer 2-3 days advance reservation, but I was only there one night. What a thrill to ride a Lipizzaner through the woods on the land of his origin! A fifty-minute ride (they provide hard hats) with a mounted guide was 20 euro. There was no one else, so I was able to set the pace & enjoy talking with the young Slovenian trainer. Being an equine enthusiast, it was a real highlight of my trip through Croatia & Slovenia.

We (me + wife + adult daughter) stayed at the hotel for 5 nights in August. My daughter wanted to visit the famous Lipica Stud farm after
seeing the Lipizzaner horses at the Spanish Riding school in Vienna last year. She had two riding lessons each day on the horses and I can only think that the only real reason to stay there would be if you are doing that.

The hotel itself is part of the Lipica establishment and it has a lot to see and is quite a big tourist attraction.

The hotel rooms were average but well kept. The room had a small balcony at the rear which had some nice views. We took the half board
option and had meals in the hotel each night, which was just as well as the place is a little remote and not near anything else touristy. The meals were basic but OK and reasonably priced although the hotel itself wasn't cheap. Unfortunately, other than the horses, there isn't too much to do around the hotel unless you want to visit the casino on site or play some golf down the road. There was nowhere just to lay about and relax. For some bizarre reason the swimming pool and sauna were closed (it was the middle of the summer season!) so it left us few options for relaxation.

Slovenia is a nice to place to visit and the country around Lipica has a few attractions to visit close by. It is very close to the Italian border (5 mins) and Trieste where I caught the train to Venice for a day trip (2 hrs by train) There was alway someone who spoke English in the hotel, so language wasn't a problem, and it seems that English is spoken a lot in Slovenia.

One word of warning was the bath/shower. The step up was very high and we had difficulty getting in and out. My daughter's room was the same.

  • Disliked — The high of the bath
