“Great package for the price”
Reviewed July 30, 2011

Just returned from Lipica and spent 3 nights at the Maestoso. We went with the riding package which included room for 3 nights, 3 riding lessons with world class instructors and half board. The room is basic, clean with a large screen tv, small balconies. We didn't see an air conditioning unit, though one was not needed during our stay. I've read the reviews about the reception and can say we did not have this problem. Reception was warm and professional and all our questions were answered professionally. Half board meals were adequate, the menu was large enough, but doesn't change, after a few dinners you're left ordering the same things. The wine list was good, with local wines, just a tad expensive. The lessons were were top notch. Their discipline is strictly dressage (english style), the horses are very well trained and you may end up wanting to take one home. The Stud farm, museum, golf course tennis courts provide a lot to do. Close by are several famous caverns and castles. There wasn't one topic that really deserved 4 stars in this review, but altogether they provide a pleasant holiday. Would like to return.

What has happened to this hotel?

The place has a lot of potential but whoever the manager is has seriously annoyed the staff.

Had we not already spent a week in Slovenia, this hotel would have persuaded us that Slovenian people only communicate with grunts, frowns and "what do you want?" followed by "no, this is not possible".

The website promises a lot, but do not believe it is possible to swim (the pool is closed and has been for some time despite the website saying to the contrary), golf (unless you happen to have your club handicap with you), fitness (unless you are a testosterone fuelled steriod enhanced bod from the 80s, it is not for you), as for riding - dont even ask.

We stayed for two nights and paid for one (care of the website) but despite phoning and emailing twice we were not booked in. Not a problem in the off season but beware during high season.

The hotel has, however, a lot of potential with a change in management - and perhaps a pay rise for the staff?!

"You never get a second chance to make a first impression".
The man at reception was clearly busy, and did not want to be bothered by customers. When we arrived and tried to get his attention he grunted to make us wait. When he had a moment we had no welcome, no smile, and he looked up in a long suffering way, making it clear we were a nuisance. Very poor - even by third world standards. He failed to tell us about equestrian lessons, for which we had travelled hundreds of kilometres, which meant we missed the first one.
I suspect that the female receptionists might have been on customer-care courses, but unfortunately the tone had been set for us, and became a running joke each time we saw him.
Rooms OK but very simple, not spacious, small concrete balcony. Just 3 or 4 TV channels. No relevant local artwork. Cleaning service good, chambermaids pleasant.
Resaurant fine, meals good but not exceptional. Good waiter service.

This hotel could be made quite brilliant with very little effort. Unfortunately that would require somebody to actually care ...

We didn't stay here in the end as the receptionist was the rudest we've ever encountered. She looked aghast at the prospect of us upgrading from the nearby Klub Hotel and horrified at the suggestion that the hotel should have air-conditioned rooms!! (The outdoor temp was 35 degrees) She was the only rude person encountered on a 10 day trip to Slovenia.

My wife and I stayed there for a week and took riding lessons. The hotel was nice and clean, the staff courteous and helpful. The half-board food was simple but OK. This is not France or Italy. The local wines are simple and rustic, almost any wine in Italy tastes better. (BYOW)
We had selected group-lessons which turned out to be not the best choice. There are some very talented instructors there but they were not used for the group-lessons, seemingly.
This centuries old horse breeding facility has a prodigious history, read up before arriving. Loads of people arrive daily from Italy and elsewhere for the gambling, and many come to watch the horse show., very few come to ride. (I disagree with another report that the US based traveling Lipizzaner show is better, it is not. Not one of the US-Lipizzaner could perform a piaffe, and could barely do a passage.)
May was a good month weather wise, trail rides were fun but the horses spooked easily, and in concert.
The place was very nice, the surroundings beautiful. Trieste, (2-hours from Venice, trains every hour), is a super nice historic roman city, and is only a 25-euro cab fare away. Slovenia has the best lime stone caves on the planet, a must see to believe. There are some close to the hotel but the ones in Postojna are incredible.
Overall Slovenia was very pleasant, the country was beautiful, the people congenial, the food was good, and the prices reasonable. (2007)

Two couples stayed here late September 2007. We selected it because of the Lipizzaner stud farm. Our rooms were nice & large with balconies (although the view wasn't much). Even the towels had the horse theme. We paid 16 euro per person to see a 35-minute performance & get a walking tour of the stud farm. The performance was a bit disappointing; I guess we expected something more like what we see in the US at Lipizzaner touring shows. We opted for half board because the farm is out in the country. Dinner was what the tour groups got - not very tasty with packaged potato puffs & nondescript meat, although the salad bar & dessert choices were a plus. The breakfast buffet was much better with quite an assortment of breads, cereal, juices, meat, cheese, fruit, etc. When I made the reservation, I inquired about trail riding. The clerk emailed me that trail riding was only available in the summer. Fortunately, I asked upon arrival & got put in touch with the 'barn lady' who said I could 'hack' in the morning. They usually prefer 2-3 days advance reservation, but I was only there one night. What a thrill to ride a Lipizzaner through the woods on the land of his origin! A fifty-minute ride (they provide hard hats) with a mounted guide was 20 euro. There was no one else, so I was able to set the pace & enjoy talking with the young Slovenian trainer. Being an equine enthusiast, it was a real highlight of my trip through Croatia & Slovenia.

  • Liked — Watching & riding the Lipizzaner horses
  • Disliked — Half board dinner
