We have just returned from a beautiful two week holiday in a gem of a place called Bled in Slovenia. Lake Bled is surrounded by wooded hills. There is a lovely church on an island in the lake and everything is overlooked by a castle on a spectacular cliff. The town has lots of well kept houses and gardens. It makes you think that the locals are really proud of their country.
This was the third time that we had stopped at the Hotel Astoria. There is the bus terminal a couple of minutes walk from the hotel from where there are many cheap and comfortable buses that go all over the place. The hotel has been recently refurbished and is really smart and clean. They have also built on an extensive health spa complex which will be open later in the year to the great advantage to the hotel. The buffet meals are of very good quality and plentiful. As we had booked through "Inghams" we were supplied with a generous packed lunch. The staff were friendly and helpful particularly at the reception and the waiters. We can recommend this hotel very much indeed.

Room Tip: Rooms with a balcony are best, however the rooms at the rear which do not have a balcony are quieter...

We were extremely impressed by the décor, service, staff, facilities and food. Our package deal with Inghams had lots of extras which made the stay even better, these included daily packed lunch, supper at the castle and free entry to the Lido.
We were at the resort for a family wedding so we visited other hotels and generally the only better thing about them was their view although they were much costlier. The rest of our family complained about the noise of church bells waking them every morning but the glazing was so good at the Astoria that we didn't even hear them even though the church is practically on the doorstep.
If you like a noisy hotel with a lively bar, this isn't the place for you, but it suited us perfectly.
The staff deserve a special mention as they were always pleasant, professional and prompt, and the chefs were producing lovely food.

Room Tip: only the rooms at the front have balconies

I booked two rooms at Hotel Astoria after reading positive reviews here. I was excited to find I could book for 2 nights for a lot cheaper than at most hostels I've stayed at in Europe, and was wayyyy more excited when we arrived and found a beautiful hotel that had just been renovated. Our rooms were incredibly clean and pleasant, with very comfortable beds and great balcony views of the city and the lake (tho the lake view might depend on the room. One of the best aspects of our stay was that Luka and the front desk staff were so friendly and helpful with tips about the best ways to make the most of our time in Bled, which honestly helped us maximize our fun in our short time there. Bled is so full of cool places, sights and activities that it was great to have some friendly tips on where to find the best aspects of the city. The final great thing about Hotel Astoria was that it had delicious breakfasts with crepes and omelettes made to order, juices, breakfast meats, breads, and even peanut butter (which this American traveler has been sorely missing!)

The only downside was that the Wellness Center is not yet up and running after the renovations, but my hope is that I will get the chance to try it out since I am already planning another trip up to Bled - the most underrated city in Europe!

Room Tip: Try to request a room with a balcony if possible, if you get one looking out on the lake it can be b...

The Good -

The food was excellent, there was a huge and varied breakfast buffet all freshly prepared including hot and cold selections, pancakes, bread/toast, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, a vegan section and even a chef on hand to rustle up a fresh omelette should you so wish.

Rooms were fresh, clean and tidy as one would expect from a hotel that had just been renovated.

Fantastic location, just a 2 minute walk to lake Bled and a 30 second walk to the bus stop. Tucked away just enough to be close to the town, yet far enough to be peaceful and quiet.

Full free TV package with over 100 channels and a few English ones.

Good shower in bathroom.

Air conditioned room, although limited control.

Free WiFi in room, and desktop computer with internet in lobby, also free to use.

Overall very friendly, helpful and easygoing staff.

The Bad -

The male receptionist who worked the morning shift was great, very helpful and happy and seemed to genuinely care about the well being of the guests. Unfortunately the same could not be said about our waitress at breakfast and dinner. She was curt and seemed unhappy for the whole of our trip. The only time I saw her smile was when an automatic door failed to open and she walked into it.

Wellness centre was closed due to it not passing some kind of health and safety check, due to open on 1st July.

Ants dispensed with the apple juice from the juice machine at breakfast. Seeing 4 or 5 of the critters bobbing around in my glass of juice was somewhat unpleasant and disconcerting. What made this worse was that the staff new about the problem yet nothing was done about it for the whole week. (Orange juice from the same machine was fine however, obviously ants prefer apples to oranges!)

Towels were replaced every day with no option not to wash.

Overall a very nice hotel and a pleasant stay.

Booked through Inghams for a week in June 2013 and recieved great service in this rebuilt hotel, (it was officially opened by the President of Slovenia whilest we were there). It is situated in Bled town just up he hill from the lake shore close to all amenities. We had a comfitable balcony room with grand views. Considering the tarriff the meals were fine and each day we availed ourselves of the hotel's cut lunch. The hotel also runs the restaurant at the Castle where we had a superb evening meal. We had arranged a rental car for ourseves and parking was no problem at the hotel. One could take reasonably priced tours from the hotel or local buses from the nearby bus station if you did not wish to drive. Would highly recommend a stay at Bled.

Room Tip: Go for a balcony for the view.

We travelled as a couple and stayed at the Hotel Astoria, Bled for one week on an Inghams lakes and mountain package through Travelzoo so shall also include the Inghams package in our review as they operate hand in hand with the hotel.

BOOKING THROUGH INGHAMS: Very efficient booking on their website. Instant email confirmation and follow up emails with
further advice. Our flight was changed to a later time by the airline and Inghams informed us via both email and post.

ARRIVAL:
The flight was with Adria Airways from Gatwick and was trouble free and took just under two hours. The Inghams rep was waiting in arrivals and we were guided efficiently to our coach. The Inghams rep on our coach was very friendly and informative. The coach takes around forty minutes from Ljubljana airport.

The Hotel Astoria is just nearing the end of a total refurbishment and the outside is very smart and modern. We were met by two friendly reception staff who dealt with a full coach load of guests extremely efficiently.

Due to the later flight we did not arrive at the hotel until ten o'clock at night but they had laid out a full buffet dinner for all of the Inghams guests which was much appreciated.

We had one disappointment at this stage. Although we were almost the first people into the restaurant the restaurant manager was insisting people sit where they were told rather than letting them choose a table. This resulted in guests being herded into the restaurant like school children. When we asked if we could sit at a table for two rather than the table for six that we were allocated we were simply told 'No' which was rather annoying and puzzling, particularly as the next couple were seated at that exact table with no problem.

The restaurant manager then wrote everybody's respective room number on a card at each table and placed it in the centre, which apparently meant that everybody had to stay at the same table for the duration of the holiday for breakfast and dinner.
We were, however, able to sort this out the next morning and a friendly waitress moved us to a table for two without problem.

THE ROOM:
We had a very nice room. It was quite spacious and both the room and bathroom were extremely clean. The bed was two queen beds pushed together and the linen and towels were top quality. There was a nice balcony with a superb view of Bled castle. The free wi-fi connection was fast and reliable. Although the room has a well stocked mini-bar there wasn't any tea or coffee making facilities in the room which would have been a nice touch although we understand this is quite common for the region.
There was an absolutely huge HD TV with lots of channel choices including movies and BBC news.

THE FOOD:
Our package included breakfast, dinner and also a packed lunch every day and free tea, coffee and biscuits on the terrace between four and six pm. The breakfast and dinner were both buffet style and we were extremely impressed with the quality of the food and the service. There were quite a lot of options at both breakfast and dinner and the friendly staff were constantly at hand to top up the food, serve drinks and clear plates.
Although we had an initial problem with his seating arrangements the restaurant manager seemed to be extremely attentive and polite and his staff very well chosen and trained.
The restaurant has been nicely decorated, is kept very clean and the furniture is modern. There is also a nice terrace and a further lounge/bar.

INGHAMS TOURS: If you are staying here on an Inghams package we can highly recommend a few of the tours and the service from the Inghams rep (Katje) which was superb. We went on the Julian Alps tour and the Cave and Castle tour and both were excellent with comfortable, safe coaches and professional reps. Our package also included dinner at the castle on one night which was very good.

CONCLUSIONS: The Hotel Astoria is extremely well run, clean, modern and the staff are well trained, polite and friendly. It's location only a few hundred metres from the lake is superb. It could be that independent travellers might like to see some info in the lobby regarding the area (maps, tours etc). There is however, a free internet PC in the lobby and the fresh fruit and bowl of sweets is a very nice touch.
The refurbishment is almost complete and a brand new Spa is due to open soon. Some guests were aware of work going on around the hotel but we were not disturbed. The refurbishment is to a very high standard.

The bathroom could do with a notice inviting guests to re-use towels if they wanted to do their bit for the environment.

The restaurant manager might consider having a sit down with the general manager/Inghams and deciding if guests might be happier choosing their seats in the restaurant rather than having them allocated on arrival.

We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and giving it nine out of ten.

Room Tip: Try to get a balcony room with a view of the castle.

We booked this hotel through Inghams and my wife and I were vey impressed with the high standard refurbishment recently carried out. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. We were fortunate to have a room with a balcony giving us a fantastic view of the castle above the lake. The quality and quantity of the choice buffet breakfast and evening meals were excellent including the daily packed lunch. We would highly recommend this hotel and no doubt the soon to be completed swimming pool and spa will enhance the facilities even further. A very memorable holiday.
