“Too much of a good thing”
Reviewed September 14, 2013

We are currently staying at the Hotel Jelovica (HJ) for the second time. The first time was in September 2011; we were a couple and everyday was 80° +. The Olympic rowing had just finished and there was still a buzz around Bled. HJ appeared to be the perfect base for exploring. I may have been slightly enchanted.

September 2013, 60°, intermittent rain, now we are three. HJ is communist chic but clean. The rooms on the lake are slightly bigger than mountain view. You can't really see the lake and a relentless church bell clangs every 15 minutes. On the mountain side there is some noise from the road. No air con in the rooms means you are likely to be disturbed from your comfortable slumber. No bath in most rooms meant a struggle with the little one.

Food used to be waiter service. Now it's a free for all buffet with queuing a sign of weakness. Food is standard Euro fare with the odd wild card thrown in and a reliance on Zucchini. In the past you had to pay for drinks, now there's beer (Tuborg) wines (vinegar) and soft drinks on tap. Most staff are helpful; some are useless. Evening meal entertainment ranges from "stick zucchini in your ears" awful to "jump of the terrace head first" distressing. I preferred my own entertainment. Name the hairdo of the other residents, Kevin Keegan and Ned Flanders were frequent and Goose from Top Gun for the men.

The pool is laughable, ah there's the bath I was after. The gym is good enough for a quick pump! It's no wellness centre.

The location is great for east side of the lake where most amenities are located. This tends to appeal to the more relaxed folk and can be most expensive for boat hire. The west side of the lake is closer to the island and has a more energetic vibe. It is home to the rowing centre and the appealing Camping Bled site. A more energetic area and a complete contrast to the east.

I love Bled. We will return but not to HJ. A revisit has shown the flaws that I'd ignored previously. I would pay the higher premium for Hotel Golf with it's emphasis on the wellness centre or Camping Bled when the little one is older. However if you want a central location close to the town, with comfortable beds, basic rooms and want a base to explore the beautiful sights that Slovenia offers in abundance then you could get much worse than HJ. For me the love affair with HJ is over; I want to see what else is out there.

Room Tip: Higher rooms (lakeside) afford the best view. These rooms are larger than mountain view. Some road n...

This hotel is not in any way luxurious but it is clean, friendly, well located and very good value. We stayed on the half board deal with free wine and beer with meals and the food was varied and good. We had a standard room which was OK but would have liked a lake view, there were none available at the time. The hotel was very well located for a short walk to the lake and very close to the bus station. There was Slovenian entertainment with the evening meal one night - this was unexpected and very good. We got the bus to Vintgar Gorge one day - beautiful, well worth the trip. We stopped off at the castle on the way back - the views of the lake are spectacular. A trip to Lake Bohinj was also a day well spent. Lake Bled is stunning, Hotel Jelovica is well placed to access the lake and other attractions and the deal represented very good value for money

We stayed 3 nights in a family room on the top floor and the Hotel Jelovica has much to recommend it, especially the price. We paid circa £90 per night for the 4 of us via booking.com during the school holidays, buffet breakfast (which was a good spread) included.

The hotel is well situated on the corner of the lake, just a short walk through a park to the water, and if you choose not to eat in the hotel (OK food, enhanced by unlimited wine & beer) only a short walk to the various restaurants in the town centre.

On the downside, there are a couple of bars near the rear of the hotel (as well as a 3D Erotica cinema across from the entrance!) and on our first night there (a Sunday) there was lot of noise until the early hours, even though we were on the top floor - especially as the windows needed to be open as no air conditioning. As mentioned by others, the regular church bell ringing does grate at first.

As regards the other facilities, the pool is little more than a splash pool (a better bet in summer is to swim in the lake) and the fitness room just a token collection of single machines of each type.

I suppose the ultimate test of a hotel is would you stay there again and here I am divided. We got more in terms of food and location than we expected for the money but the room 'design' and lack of air con was disappointing so if expecting warm weather and not on a budget, think would look elsewhere.

Room Tip: The family rooms seem to have been designed without a balcony - appreciating this is safer, when tra...

We spent a week here the last week of August and were very happy. Our room, 353 was on the 3rd floor and one of the lucky ones that could see the lake (double, superior - worth the extra money in my opinion. Had a fridge too) yes, St Martins church next door does ring it's bells every 15 mins from 6am but it really didn't bother us. The bathroom was small but adequate. Our daughters had room 354 across the corridor and their bathroom was newer. Breakfast was buffet style and had plenty of choice. Cold meats, bread, rolls, yoghurts, scrambled egg, sausages, bacon, cereal, fruit, croissants etc. tea, coffee, hot chocolate, soft drinks. Dinner was also buffet style and had 2 meat dishes and 1 fish dish every evening, also 2 x soup, salad, 3 desserts plus ice cream etc and, best of all, unlimited help yourself beer, red wine, white wine and soft drinks. The waiters/waitresses were lovely and quick to clear empty plates. You keep the same table but if you want you can choose to sit out on the terrace. Beware of the hungry sparrows though.
The swimming pool is small but still nice. I had a relaxing massage one evening. 45 euros for an hour. It was lovely. You can walk through the park to the Lake in just a few mins, if you go out of the main entrance the main bus station is just over the road and has a good service to lots of places and transport is quite cheap. Got a bus to Ljubljana one day for under 7 euros. You buy singles not returns. The main part of the town is less than 10 mins walk. You can be on a Pletna within 5 mins. The castle is a 20 min uphill walk away. There's a take away next door and lots and lots of bars and restaurants.

Warning - This place is like an oven, no air condition in the hotel
How come the charge 100 Euro per night ? The temparture could rise to 36C in August . In addition the promise a room with a view to lake while we got a room turn to lake but can not see it since a lot of trees outside the hotel hide it

very good value for money in a lovely position. We had lakeside room (this is not necessarily lake view as the trees get in the way) Clean comfortable rooms, good shower and a nice balcony. We had B&B with evening meal which included wine and beer. Generally the food was good however a good tip is to be in on time particularly for the evening meal, the staff are very good. the tables are cleared promptly. The sparrows are a bit of a nuisance at breakfast if you eat on the terrace! We loved Lake Bled and would go again (very soon we hope) and would stay at this hotel again.
It would be nice to have a fridge in the room, however, the bar would always supply a jug of ice for our drinks which we enjoyed on the balcony.

Room Tip: go for a lakeside room if possible. We were on the 3rd floor, nice view, but couldn't see much o...

The rooom was good with views of the lake. We were on the fourth floor. The beds were very comfortable but we had to request a change of bed linen. The rooms have no air conditioning and although the windows can be left open at night time it is quite noisy because of the church bells and the geography of the area. The food was hit and miss, some nights better than others. Not very good at replenishing dishes and sometimes cold. You were allocated a seat in the dining room and tables were very close together, so be prepared to share meal times with the same people!!!! Would certainly have preferred to choose a table.
We ate out some nights.
The staff were very obliging, and friendly but wouldn't return. Mainly because of the meal situation and the very hot rooms

Room Tip: rooms with lake views are south facing and the fourth floor has wonderful views.
