“Great location - Restaurant more miss than hit”
Reviewed July 27, 2010

We stayed at Vila Preseren for four nights as part of our tour around Europe. The rooms, while small, are sufficient and comfortable. We arrived during the Bled Days and Nights festival which occurs in the park that surrounds the Vila. This made it quite noisy in our room (overlooking the park), though not unpleasant as we were interested in the festival ourselves. Since the festival ended the rooms have been very quiet, despite lots of people still being around the town.

Vila Preseren's greatest asset is its location; right on the lake in a small park. You step out the door and you are greeted with lovely scenery.

Unfortunately the staff and restaurant at Vila Preseren are a bit of a mixed bunch. We booked in with a "romantic package" that included breakfast each morning and a three course meal each night at the Vila. The included dinners turned out to be a bit of a mistake; something I would not recommend. The four nights we were here we had very mixed service and meals, though tending to be more miss than hit.

The service and food the first night was great, and we looked forward to eating there the following days. As our stay has progressed, the service and food has deteriorated to somewhere between inattentive and rude. Such a contrast to the first night, and very disappointing.

The meals were also a mixed serving. Each night there was always something not quite right with the meals that took away from the experience we were expecting. The meals were so close to being good it was such as shame, and such simple things - overcooked steak, fish not filleted correctly, overcooked/not well matched stuffed squid...

Breakfast has been good though, with a few things on offer, and fruit (which is not on the menu, but available on request), tea/coffee and juice all included. And deliciously fresh croissants.

Overall we would recommend staying at Vila Preseren, but not with the included dinners.

We have stayed at the Vila Preseren three times, in 1999, 2001, and most recently in 2006, for three or four nights on each visit. Lake Bled is a magical place with its landscaped lakeside promenade, the castle high on the cliff above town, and the view of the Kamnik Alps looming in the background. Unfortunately, much of the developed eastern end of Lake Bled is a victim of the mass tourism mania of Tito's Yugoslavia, when hulking soul-less concrete hotels were built to bring in Western tourists and currency, aesthetics be damned. The Vila Preseren, on the other hand, evokes the traditional atmosphere of Austro-Hungarian Central Europe and is a wonderful example of an earlier and more charming era in Slovenia.

I know that the Vila Preseren has undergone a major renovation since we last stayed there, and I believe it also changed ownership and/or management. Some of my comments may thus be dated, but I will relate them anyway for what they are worth. On each of our three visits we booked an upstairs suite of two connecting rooms furnished in traditional style and sporting a private balcony that overlooks the lake. The suite was clean and well-maintained, and the furniture was comfortable. The bathroom was modern and excellent. We used the balcony a lot, and although the Vila Preseren's terrace restaurant is situated below and in front of it, we never had a problem with noise or privacy. There is on-site parking for hotel guests but it can be a tight fit at times.

The continental breakfast, served in a bright, cheerful room that leads directly to the terrace, was excellent and quite ample, with a good variety of Slovene cheeses and meats to accompany the baked goods, fruit, yogurt, etc. We had dinner on the terrace at least once during each visit -- nothing fancy, but in Slovenia even the standard fare (generally, some variation of meat, potatoes, and salad) is fresh, tasty, and well prepared.

The Villa Preseren staff tended to be young, but what they sometimes lacked in experience they more than made up for with genuinely engaging, warm, and welcoming personalities.

Some previous reviewers have commented on the fact that, due to its location right off of the lakefront promenade, the Vila Preseren does not have much of a sense of privacy, especially in summer when all of Bled is innundated with visitors. That is undoubtedly true, but we never felt uncomfortable by that or bothered by noise, even though we both tend to be sensitive to it. Of course, the fact that each of our visits took place in June may have been a mitigating factor; we would definitely not stay in Bled in the summer high season, especially August. Spring and autumn are equally beautiful in Bled and all of Slovenia; either would be an excellent time to visit, and the Vila Preseren would be a good base for exploring this scenically spectacular region of the country.

Overall all the aspects that are normally asked to be commented upon were fine as reflected in the stars ratings we have given. However in August parking was achieveable but not always comfortable in such a small reataurant car park and the off street parking was very very busy therefore not really an option. Additionally although we had a very smart and well furbished lake view suite the potential quiet romantic feel was tainted by constant [ 10am - 12 midnght ] music from the restaurant below. Generally Lake Bled was very busy and there was also much ambient noise surrounding the vila although to be fair much of this was just general holiday traffic and therefore relatively acceptable. In conclusion we consider that this was one of the best locations on the Lake and we were were very glad not to be staying in the main town which we felt was rather commercialized, built up and disappointingly ordinary.

We booked this hotel only 2 days before our arrival via booking.com. We wanted to make a holiday in a peaceful, quite place and Vila Preseren seemed to be the place we were looking for. When we arrived we just realised that the Vila Preseren was located in a public park full of people (no private area around the Vila) and the park view room faced to the church directly located in front of our window and the bell was ringing every quarter hour. We complained at the hotel staff (same one as the the restuarant staff) and they offered us to go to Vila Bled (run by the same company). We did and we received a room for the same price and we were very happy with our stay. However the Vila Preseren is not one we wanted the hotel staff managed our problem quickly and very well.

Just a quick review to say how dissapointed i was with Villa Preseren this week! My partner and i booked a double room (lake view) for 2 nights last week which we were really looking forward too. We had already stayed 2 nights at the excellent penzion Mayer but decided we would love to have a little luxury right by the lake for an additional couple of nights. On arriving we handed our booking confirmation to the manager, only to be told 'sorry but we are overbooked, there is no room for you here!'. After a long heated discussion, we were given no explanation or apology as to why our booking was taken months ago when the hotel may all ready have been fully booked. Quite frankly the manager's attitude was appaling - quite rude and treated us as though it was no big deal we had to find somewhere else in peak season, on Lake Bled at 7pm in the evening!!!! We ended up finding a roon, but had to pay nearly £180 for the night at Grand Hotel Toplice. We had been looking forward to staying at the villa preseren for months, i was really dissapointed at what happened, but to be honest , one of the main features of the hotel is the beautiful terrace right on the lake which is picutured as quiet, peaceful and romantic on there website - but in actual fact in August it was just over run with families and children frantic, unorganised waiting staff. 3 people in the resturant complained in the time we spoke the manager about our room (5 mins!) Overall a terrible experience - steer well clear in my opinion.
