We celebrated our last evening in Warsaw at Przy Zamku on the recommendation of a concierge of the Novotel Centrum. My wife, sister, and brother-in-law all dined on a beef with wild mushrooms, while I had the wild boar chasseur. They liked the beef, while I loved the boar, which has a more robust taste than roast pork. My potato dumplings were delicious.

The first three wines I tried to order were not available, so we drank a pretty nice chianti classico.

We all had lodi, the Polish ice cream, for dessert.

We were initially seated next to a table of businessmen, with very little room between us. The maitre d' moved us to a table in the corner where we had more room and were a little more private.

Overall, we enjoyed ourselves very much.

The problem with old town squares everywhere is that it usually is THE most likely spot to walk into an overpriced tourist trap of a restaurant. In this case we took the risk and quite frankly the experience was just fine. The price and quality were almost in balance. The server was so sweet, very friendly and welcoming. My eissbein was fantastic, they really know how to prepare pork in Poland. On the other hand, the restaurant claims to be a game specialist, but my wife's filet of venison was unfortunately clearly overdone. But all things considered, I still think the spot was the best one of the lot around the square.

We found the restaurant through the internet. We reserved a table by phone, however when we got there, we were told that no such reservation existed. It turns out that they registered our table with the "siser" restaurant (an Italian one).
We were finally seated at the Italian restaurant and offered the menu for Przy Zamku. The menu is quite different than the one published on the website. For example, 3 out the 5 items on the oneline fish menu that not appear on the regular menu. Furthermore, after placing the order, the waiter informed us that they ran out of Trout and that only 1 sreving was left.
And the food... was less than mediocre

A restaurant in front of the royal palace, at the square, in the touristy old town. A place like that should have all the warning signs of 'tourist trap'. But since it was a rainy night we took our chances. And we were suprised. The food was good with large portions. It was good old fashioned Polish cuisine with a lot of game. The staff was clumsy-friendly but that only added to the experience. I can imagine that when busy and the terrass full this is a problem. But on a rainy night in Warsaw this is not a bad choice.
