'A bohemian atmosphere', 'charming and unique' - yes, especially if you like drunkards singing with uneven voices, 'artists' in 'trendy' cafes being simply drug-addicted, numbminded loafers, and 'unique experience' means you can simply get hit in the back of your head in some side street.
All right, it has some (moderately) interesting architectonical attractions, but generally it is better to avoid this area.

Praga , over the river from the main city , was much less damaged during the war , so much so that Roman Polanski used it as part of the backdrop to The Pianist as there were still buildings standing that were there in !945 . Our hotel receptionist recommended a trip across the river to see the bears in their pit on the main street , the statue of the Musicians and to eat at the restaurant DeCoterie . The latter turned out to be another great find . The food was excellent : potato cakes with sour cream , goulash , and vodka at drinkable prices . The area itself is a bit down at heel but on the up we were told . Hope it doesn't become yet another tourist trap !

Literally it means Prague but this is actually the SoHo of Warsaw. Once a neighbourhood in which the poor and, to an extent, dangerous people lived, Praga is becoming a trendy district of Warsaw. Infamous artists, actors, rockers and the likes who are yet to break through began to live in this district because of lower rents and proximity to the centre. This transformed the place and now different people live in harmony there.

I hadn't been to the oldest part of Praga for years, so I took advantage of a free Saturday summer afternoon to go for a stroll. Having read how Praga was up and coming, artistic, bohemian, etc., I was expecting things to have moved on from how I remember the district 10-15 years ago.

But the reality is that very little has changed. Apart from a cluster of restaurants and trendy bars on Zabkowska Street, the area is as poor and run-down as it always was. Pre-war tenement houses in a terrible state of repair, locals drinking beer on old sofas in building courtyards, broken pavements...

Having become accustomed to the Warsaw of glitzy shopping centres, modern trams, office buildings, gated communities and fashionable bars, it was a shock to realise that Praga has stood still, apparently forgotten and overlooked.

That evening I was sharing my experiences with a friend who was born and grew up in Praga. My friend said he was happy such places still exist in Warsaw, as they have real character, so I reminded him that it was easy for him to say that as he has moved on in life and isn't trapped in that environment. He took my point!

Is Praga dangerous? Walking around on a sunny afternoon I did not feel in danger, but was wary and trod cautiously. I explored a few old building courtyards, but did so discreetly and avoided places where people were drinking beer. Just a matter of commonsense really, as in any other big city.

We stayed in the Praga district of Warsaw for 4 days at the Hetman Hotel. Its across the Vistula River.Although people were saying its a dangerous place..etc...I can say we never felt in danger..although we were not out late at night ...actually we quite enjoyed the area..it has a real "neighborhood" feel to it.Yes the buildings are very old and ugly maybe..but its part of the history. The area was never built up or renovated. The people may be poor..or working class..yes you may see a few "undesirables" around but no problems and you get this in all cities I think.People were helpful offering to give us directions a couple times. My father fell in the street one day and three people ran to his rescue and helped him even offering to take him to hospital.
They are digging for the metro lines(from what we saw on signs) so area across from the Mall is under construction.
We enjoyed the Mall..eating places...the Orthodox Church..the "Blue Angel" statues around town..the hidden courtyards and shrines inside them...seeing Mala and Stalowa Streets where the famous film "The Pianist" was filmed (among other locations).the Russian Bazaar..the many second hand clothes shops on Targowa Street browsing just for fun.
Its easy to walk over bridge to Old Town or take the numerous trams.
I think its an area to see if you want to experience another side of Warsaw. Up to you!
