We stayed in the Praga district of Warsaw for 4 days at the Hetman Hotel. Its across the Vistula River.Although people were saying its a dangerous place..etc...I can say we never felt in danger..although we were not out late at night ...actually we quite enjoyed the area..it has a real "neighborhood" feel to it.Yes the buildings are very old and ugly maybe..but its part of the history. The area was never built up or renovated. The people may be poor..or working class..yes you may see a few "undesirables" around but no problems and you get this in all cities I think.People were helpful offering to give us directions a couple times. My father fell in the street one day and three people ran to his rescue and helped him even offering to take him to hospital.
They are digging for the metro lines(from what we saw on signs) so area across from the Mall is under construction.
We enjoyed the Mall..eating places...the Orthodox Church..the "Blue Angel" statues around town..the hidden courtyards and shrines inside them...seeing Mala and Stalowa Streets where the famous film "The Pianist" was filmed (among other locations).the Russian Bazaar..the many second hand clothes shops on Targowa Street browsing just for fun.
Its easy to walk over bridge to Old Town or take the numerous trams.
I think its an area to see if you want to experience another side of Warsaw. Up to you!

We'd heard that this was Warsaw's equivalent to Shoreditch in London - well it's getting there but has a fair way to go yet. Head for Zabkowska St – it seems to be the main destination. This is the kind of place you will either love or hate. If you are looking for edgy bars, art spaces (as opposed to galleries), and some very decent cafes, then you should like the area (but bearing in mind, we’re talking about a dozen or so places – not wall to wall down the street). There is no doubt it is still very run down, but clearly ‘up and coming’ with a huge Carrefour, massive road works, and advertising billboards for new loft apartments being developed. We happily wandered for several hours going from bar to bar and prices of alcohol and food are significantly less than the other side of the river. I’ve read comments suggesting it’s not safe to walk around. I can’t really comment although we met a Brit living in the area who said he thought it was pretty safe. We did walk round – although it was only about 9pm on a Sunday. It seemed fine – the main minor irritant was people asking for cigarettes.

This is a district of Warsaw located east from the Vistula river. Although constantly developing, it is not a tourist attraction. In some of the areas it is worth taking special care to be safe as a tourist.

I was in this part of warsaw sunday evening: I liked only Ząbkowska street, the other part of Prague is very grey, but here is good: I ate at decoteria, a very good restaurant that is in front of Lysy pingwin and has good golonka anda great choices of vodka. For a drink I went to lysy pingwin and I ask for a krupnik (the barman will fire it and then u can breathe the vapour and drink the hot vodka), and there is also another pub, w oparach absurdu, that looks very weird and it worth a visit.

Don't get me wrong, it's not like there's nothing at all on this side, there are nice things, but you're more likely to run into trouble here than in other parts of Warsaw and also some of the streets are the closest thing Warsaw has to slums.
