“Noisy”
Reviewed June 28, 2012

WE stayed here for 2 nights on a european tour. Unfortunately it is situated across the road from a Fan Stadium. The European cup was on while we were there, so there was a giant screen, a DJ and alot of drinking going on. Would be noisy anyway as it's the venue for concerts etc now.

No air conditioning and very small beds. Pre communist type of building, very dark. Shower was over the bath, but not above the taps, but over the long side of the very narrow bath. No handrail to grab and very slippery bath, great care needed.

Meals taken in the bar area, which was also noisy, but on the plus side, the food was very nice.

Certainly wouldn't want to stay here again

The Metropol is very well located for downtown Warsaw - a legacy from its earlier days as one of the main hotels of the communist era.

Unfortunately, that history leads to some of its key drawbacks:
- it is very noisy at night - you need earplugs to cut out the trams and rowdy party-goers - and all rooms face the street
- the heating is uncontrollable in the rooms, with no air conditioning, so you'll need the window open unless the weather is cold (even when it's shut, you'll hear the street noise)
- the standard rooms are small - originally mainly singles, so space is at a premium with nowhere to sit
- Unlike most of Warsaw, wifi is NOT free (unless you book direct on the hotel website); it's not very expensive, but the service is slow and poor, with a stupid browser log-in which wastes a lot of time
- the hotel is used by some coach tour parties, so the bar/restaurant can be dominated by these some nights - not a big problem.

On the plus side:
- the breakfast buffet is very good - we ate well enough to not need lunches whilst we stayed
- the location for public transport is excellent, on the main metro line and many tram and bus routes
- the 175 bus from the airport stops right outside - and can also be used to travel up to the Old Town for meals and tourism.

You do get what you pay for - the Metropol is fairly good value for money if you can live with its downsides.

Room Tip: The hotel apparently has some newer "Executive" rooms with a/c and more space. We didn...

The staff at the front counter seem quite indifferent towards us as we checked in and we seemed more of a hindrance than anything else. We were told to go to the 6th level despite having a room number starting with 3. Naturally we got to the 6th level and realised that this was not our rooms level. This wasn't a great start.

We were in a basic room which was well, very basic. There was not even air-conditioning and it can get hot with two people in the room. There might be air-conditioning in the hallway, but if there is this doesn't get past a closed door. You cannot have the window open as the room will be filled with street noise during the night.

It was a fairly old style bathroom and the bottom of the door frame had been mostly eaten away by rot.

The pillows were of very average quality and needed replacing.

If you need something no frills to stay near the central train station in the middle of Warsaw this is the place.

I have been upgraded to Junior Suite by the very friendly and professional staff so instead of standard small hotel room I have received a huge room with a view of Palac Kultury and probably the noisiest intersection in Poland. Unfortunately the view from most of the rooms is obstructed by giant billboard hanging from the hotel's facade, covering most of the hotel windows. I found out that it is a very common view in Warsaw - you can see these giant billboards all around in the centre.

Location is perfect for these who come with a train to Warszawa Centralna - it is just several hundreds meters away but also there is a direct bus nr 175 from Okecie Airport (mere 30 minutes ride for PLN 3.60 ticket which can be bought from the ticketing machine or from the driver) to the hotel (the stop is called Centralna). The hotel is located side by side with more posh hotel Polonia. There is a money exchange office (called Kantor in Polish) just besides the hotel entrance and there are quite a few around.

Breakfast are excellent there is a lot of high quality food to choose from. There are lots of small eateries with traditional Polish zapiekankas, pierogi, grochówka, bigos so there is no need to visit all these Mc's or Fried whatevers. It is some 3 kms nice walk through Krakowskie przedmiescie to the old town passing by Warsaw University, Presidential Palace, Chopin's place, Bristol and Europejski hotels etc. Or you can walk the other way to beautiful Lazienki park whatever you prefer.
