“Could be one of the most attracitve hotels we stayed in Europe...”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

We simply lucked out, and it does not happen often. We travel a lot and somewhat get what you pay for. But this place offered more than we imagined.
A former granary converted into an attractive hotel with modern substructure of steel and glass but meticulously maintaining the old polished wood and stucco including the mill. We had a room, low beamed ceiling with a port hole kind of window, a double French door lead into an adjacent salon which was a converted grain shoot that was roomy with two comfy chairs over looking the Vistula river. We relaxed and enjoyed the sunrise and sunset paint the World pink while the regatta practiced below us.
The hotel with all the historic charm was spotlessy clean, dotted with modern whimsical art work, rooms were stocked with tea/ coffee maker, big bottle of water, mini-bar and a plasma TV. The famed gingerbread cookie was there on turn down. The towel was fluffy and comfortable, something you expect in the big name hotels.
The staff were gracious and friendly.
Some have said the restaurant and hotel is a bit kitschy with the decor, mil and grain sacks as pillows but then again, this really was a granary so why not go with it. The food at the restaurant was hearty, full and delicious. I highly recommend eating here too.
The breakfast was unbelievable! The spread was generous from the usual cold cereal, breads, preserves, but also there were so many cold salads and aspics, molds and meats and cheese. All placed in a moderate elegant platter rather than a huge old country style buffet chaffing dish so it was refreshed quickly. There was an omelette and pancake station as well.
The town of Torun is utterly underestimated and we regretted that we only stayed in this lovely hotel for just one day.

Stayed here for two nights during the month of June 2012. Travelled with friends and was given a delightful three bed suite over two floors. The location is right in the middle of the town and only a few minutes stroll from the heart of the local attractions.

It is a former grannery and only recently refurbished to excellent standards. It is by far the best non chain hotel I have ever stayed in. It was great value for money and the staff were always willing to help us out.

I would have no hesitation is recommending this hotel to anyone who is planning to stay in Torun!!!

Well done!!

We tried Karczma Spichrz because a friend of mine recommended it and I must say that he was right: food is delicious, more than decent portions and professional service (even with foreigners).
The staff was also very kind when we asked some tourist information. I strongly recommend this restaurant for a family meeting or business lunch.

Pozdrawiamy,
Kierownictwo i Pracownicy Hotelu Karczmy Spichrz.

Torun is a historic town, the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus, and so has many attractions. The town itself is being renovated street by street and gradually the facades are being cleaned and the paintwork beautifully refurbished. Spichrz was a granary, as the Vistula River, on which boats carrying grain were transported, runs next to the hotel. The hotel has received prizes for its renovation of the old granary and certainly this is well deserved. The rooms are quite dark, but that is because the windows are the authentic windows and so relatively small for modern standards. There is a wonderful atmosphere, the lifts, stairs and entrance are all modern but do not impinge on the character of the older part of the building. There is a wonderful restaurant downstairs serving traditional, beautifully cooked Polish cuisine. The breakfast, which is included in the price of the room is sumptous and again, includes many traditional Polish dishes. What is more, there is a kettle in the room and so coffee and tea is available whenever you want it. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel for its atmosphere, excellent food and very helpful service.

In Europe, it's often hard to find rooms large enough to accommodate a family of four. We were very comfortable in our room that had two single beds on the lower level and a queen-size bed on the upper level, all with stunning views of the river. The hotel is clean and decorated with attention to every detail. Perfect location for walking through Torun, and there are a few parking places available within the hotel's enclosure. Don't miss exploring the back staircase from the hotel rooms down to the restaurant as well as the hallway on level 4 that leads to the original mill wheel. Photographs document the restoration of the building - fascinating.
