“Cute, well refurbished buildings”

Ranked #2 of 74 things to do in Torun
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 16, 2013

I am always surprised when there is a huge building in the middle of a town square, but that is the case both in Torun and in Krakow. The town square has the town hall building in the middle of it, and other medieval building surrounding it. They are well preserved and well worth a look.

You find a Kopernik Pierniki factory store, the Jesuit, Academic Church as well as the Asian musum among the things to see and do on the square.

The Old Town of Torun is full of history. It has many monuments of architecture beginning from the Middle Ages. It's listed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage. It is really worth seeing it. The great astronomer Mikołaj Kopernik (Nicolaus Copernicus) was born there.

Like Krakow, Torun escaped the almost total destruction that leveled Warsaw in the war. So the Old Town area is original, not reconstructed. It's full of beautiful old buildings, churches, cobblestone streets, city walls, statues and more. There's also a popular old leaning tower where visitors try to stay balanced standing with their backs to the tower wall as a test of their vow of chastity. We didn't see any tourists who were able to maintain their balance.

Our host hired a guide to give us a private tour of the area. It was most helpful to hear about the history and legends associated with Old Town, especially since we had limited time before our train back to Warsaw. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars but we only had time for lunch in the area. Old Town is a definite must-see if you are in Torun, and if you don't have time to go to Krakow, it may even be worth it to catch the train from Warsaw to see what many people refer to as a "mini-Krakow."

Lovely town square with plenty of dining and drinking options (don't forget the ubiquitous ice cream!)

It is a lovely old town, stunning Gothic buildings and architecture with plenty of cafes, bars and restaurant's.

Just off the square is a good high street plus there are a number of points of interest including churches, the leaning tower, old city walls, planetarium, tutonic castle and Copernicus house.

Take time to enjoy this beautiful city.
