“Great accommodations for all ages”
Reviewed August 4, 2009

We stayed in this hostel for four days, with three generations -- a couple in their 20's, parents in their 50's, and a 73-year-old grandmother. The Secret Garden exceeded all of our expectations of a "hostel". It was reasonably quiet, very clean, had decent beds, creative, cosy decor, and helpful, kind staff. The shower/toilet facilities were new and clean, and the breakfasts a satisfying selection of cheeses, meats, yogurt, cereal and toast. Great value for those who simply wanted a clean, safe, reasonably quiet place to lay their heads.

Stayed at Secret Garden Hostel one night in April 2009. Companion and I had a private room with a shared bath. Place was PERFECT. Very clean. Inexpensive (about $30 USD). Roomy. Shared baths were immacculate, and there appeared to be one bath for each of the rooms in our area of the hostel....so there actually was not any sharing. Location is about 15-20 minute casual walk to Krakow historic center. The walk is great.....through Jewish area, past Wawel Castle, into center. I thought this place was so good that I joined tripadvisor (which I love) to write this review. If you're going to Krakow, stay here!

We did a three nighter 26/5/09 – 29/5/09. The apartment is in an absolute great location in the old Jewish quarter (old town). That’s definitely a plus for this place but let’s get some moans out of the way first. It was a bit of a trek to get the apartment key from the hostel then walk back to the apartment with large case. There was also no clear signage of apartment but we did have reasonable directions from hostel - you might need to ask a couple of times for directions but most people speak English.

The apartment was very clean and tidy and had plenty of bits and bobs, crockery, coffee maker etc but we didn’t use them as we always ate out. The bed was a little uncomfortable and there was a towel shortage only two hand towels were provided – make sure you pack some!

One major thing to avoid is walking back to the hostel for the inclusive breakfast – dining room like a zoo and there are plenty of places to eat near the apartment for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Eat at the Jewish 'The Ark' restaurant in the square for your evening meal - fantastic!!!

I don’t want to tell you too much as it will spoil things but in summary the apartment was basic but clean and is in a fantastic location. Use the trams and a taxi to the airport is only around 80 Zloty. Visit the cloth market and don’t be afraid to barter down prices at shops and the little golf cart tour things.

Hostel is great, just what you need. Cheap, clean, fairly central, about five-ten minute walk to central Kazimierz. Very secure, quiet (at least when we were there). It is opposite a homeless soup kitchen if that bothers anybody, but it shouldn't!

Just come back from a 3 day stay at this hostel.

It's great! Really friendly staff, free internet access, basic but tasty breakfast, incredibly clean rooms and showers.

The lady on reception couldn't have been nicer - took time to tell us about the buses we needed, provided numerous maps and made us feel very welcome.

The only complaint wold be sound proofing - the walls are quite thin and the doors bang loudly too. Not an ideal place for light sleepers or if you have noisy neighbours.

Overall it is great value for money. The location is good for the Jewish Quarter and seemed safe and quiet.

Great for couples / professionals. Has the efficiency and cleanliness of a hotel but at hostel prices!

was pleasantly surprised how the secret garden hostel in kazimierz was quiet at night, good priced and with free internet, tea/coffee.
Room was clean with comfortable bed, and shower only across the way from bedroom. No queues for shower/toilet so was happy to pay for a room with these facilities.
No safefy deposit box in room, but staff happy to keep valuable in theres with a paper to say what was in their possesion of yours.
this i was happy with.
With good transport links to town centre and only about 20 minutes walk into town anyway, i felt this was a good location.
Although hostel situated in south kazimierz(south of town) i felt this was good as i was able to explore the jewish area more than had i stayed north nearer the old town.
everything was easily walkable to with transport cheap and food good.

The hostel was not that far out of the way, and it is located in the Jewish quarter so if that will be part of what you plan to see in Krakow then this hostel is very convenient. Definitely not top quality, but for a hostel at a good price I thought the value was great. The breakfast was just so-so, cornflakes, yogurt, salami and cheese, and some bread, but all you can eat and you can definitely fill up. Plus they are very flexible as to when they serve it, so you can get out the door early if you want. The staff was extremely helpful, even when there was a mix-up with my reservation. My only issue with this hotel was that I could hear everything, including the idiot that got locked out of her room at 3AM as she knocked on the door (not loudly, but for a good ten minutes) until her travel companion let her in. I could hear their conversation through the door as well, and even make out the names of the people, so the walls really were THIN. Nonetheless, if I were travelling alone in Krakow I would stay here again.

  • Liked — The staff was very friendly
  • Disliked — The paper thin walls
