Owner description: Serving as a royal residence and the site where the country's rulers governed Poland for five centuries (1038-1596), this castle is a symbol of the independent Polish state and today contains a priceless collection of 16th-century Flemish tapestries, considered to be one of the largest in the world.

The castle & cathedral are very imposing and we stayed in a hotel opposite which had great views. When I decided to visit there were long queues for tickets with people being pushed round in groups. Best to visit at night and soak up the atmosphere without buying a ticket.

Commanding astounding views of both the Old Town, the Jewish Quarter and the River Vistula the castle is a must see. Think Age of Empires meets High Catholic Cathedral splendour with a couple of bits chucked in and added on by the Austrian Empire and you wont go far wrong. You can walk round the battlements but entry to the Watchtower and Cathedral cost. Still, worth a visit if only to see awe-inspiring courtyard.

On the hill and close to the city centre. Free to walk around the inside and outside - be prepared to pay to visit the royal staterooms, armoury etc.

A bit of a walk up but a very interesting castle. If you watch it closely, it has 4 sides but one of them is actually just a facade for the castle square and not the outside wall for rooms. Interesting.
