Make the most of seeing and hearing about Krakow and its history by taking one of the free walking tours that meet at the town square at 11am and 11.30am. We caught a snippet of one of them and regret not having done a full tour. Excellent way to learn about Krakow's history.

The Old City's perimeter is the park that was once the city moat, so it's easy to navigate, whether by foot or map.

This is not a pristine, exhibit-like place. The most prominent buildings and alleys are lovingly restored, but much work remains. Also, the architecture is a bit of a hodge podge, as Krakow has mostly been spared the sort of destruction and plunder other European cities have endured. With a bit of imagination, you can get a good sense of what it was like here in virtually every era, including communism.

Try to find a good guided tour, ideally on foot. Both the documented history and the folklore gives texture and depth to the city. Poles in general and Krakowians in particular are rightly proud of this city, but have no illusions about the many facets of its history.

This is one of the most beautiful Old Towns I have ever seen in europe. It takes a lot of beating. don't bother with Warsaw, go to Krakow, this should still be the capital of Poland. What a Gem!!!

A great visit, first time here and thoroughly enjoyed our time here. You can do whatever you want, we've walked loads but there are many tours on offer. Look around and see who's got the best deal. Read your guides and maps you will find plenty to keep you occupied. We just walked past a church we've somehow missed all week so was pleasantly surprised when we came across it. If its winter when you visit wear layers, you will need it, and sensible shoes. Don't be afraid to try different restaurants, some do offer deals but we've not paid over £40 for a two course meal with drinks and coffee. Enjoy your trip, we'll be coming back.
