Traditional Polish cuisine in an old world setting. Nice international wine list.

I was dining alone on a weeknight, the restaurant was busy until 9pm but was almost empty after that. Had pierogi (meat filled dumplings) and sauerkraut cabbage for starters, then lamb shank with more cabbage and braised potatoes for the main course. Finished up with a pancake stuffed with apples and glazed with liqueur. The food was good, especially the pierogi. The decor of the restaurant is nice. The service was good but a bit on the monosyllabic side. An interesting detail, if a tad eerie, was a lady dressed in full evening regalia, singing in an operatic voice (Italian, Spanish, Russian and Polish songs) and playing the accordion.

The whole menu (plus a glass of beer and a glass of the house red wine) cost 124 zl or 30 eur.

Very nice decor, felt like sitting in a museum. Service was polite and fast (almost too fast, we had barely finished our first course when the second arrived).
Food was great, I have never eaten pork trotters before but it was extremely tender and moist, very well cooked.

Where do I start? By far the biggest dining disappointment in Gdansk. The only thing going for the hotel is their strange deco. Which I must say needs a little bit of dusting (they clearly want their decorations with dust and cobwebs I guess). The handpainted (more like a very shaky hand writing with a marker) lamps leave a lot to wish for. The service unbelievably bad. Firstly - closing hours. Their fron door says open till 24 (midnight) When arriving at 22:10 we were told that the restaurant closes in 10 minutes and they will not serve us. Upon informing that the guidebooks say that they are open till midnight . no reaction from the staff. But we returned the following evening since this place was recommended by Lonely Planet. The food - not in the slightest bit different from anything available in the polish cuisine category (I have lived several years in Poland - trust me). The potatoes and additives were TOTALLY overcooked with far too much grease. These Additives also bear a hidden cost - you do not get any sides on your order. So e.g main course of Zrazy (polish meat roll) is just that - no sauce, no potatoes, no salad in the price they give (overpriced). They even want to charge you a euro for ketchup (not that I had any). The frontwoman (owner?) of the restaurant should not be permitted to serve. She was rude in her attitude and kept on serving as if she were doing the world a huge favour. And the conversations they have in Polish - vulgar and very uncomfortable for someone who speaks Polish (I do). The Lech Walesa Herring on the menu - a total waste of taste buds (their high recommendation), the dumplings uneventful, the soups disappointing and the main courses - well overcooked and should not be allowed on the table. Beer and alcohol is overpriced by 15-25% compared to restaurants on the Dluga and Dlugie Pobrzeze Streets. Ah yes and the wonderful switch of approach when the frontwoman overheard us speaking about restaurant reviews. A parting gift of a DVD with the restaurant as the main focus (a VERY bad marketing trick) couldn't make us feel like this night and money was totally wasted. A pity, because they rely on a reputation that in light of what we have seen is TOTALLY unjustified. A big no no - do save yourself the time and money and go to Velevetka, Zuraw or Goldwasser instead. At least you wont be disappointed
