“Part of Valtice castle”
Reviewed January 5, 2012

The best is to connect Valtice castle visit and guided tour in wine cellars including wine tasting. Do not forget to make a tour in nearby park!

“One stop place to taste the best Czech wines”
Reviewed December 22, 2007

If you are in the area of either Brno or Vienna then this place deserves a stop off for all wine lovers. Firstly the boring bits a direct train runs from Brno to Breclav and then a short 12 minute connection to Valtice. A word of warning though, as you leave the main ticket office of Breclav onto the platforms, turn right and platform 4 for Valtice is located there. Follow the signs for 4 in the tunnel link and you end up on a disused platform.
On arrival at Valtice by rail, its a leisurely 10-15 min walk downhill to the village and castle where the wine salon is based. There is also a direct bus, number 10 from Breclav bus station to the castle area of Valtice. Very cheap approx 15Kc. Having entered the castle entrance, the wine salon is underground on the right and offers many different wine programs. We chose the 349Kc program that allows you to sample as many or as little of the wines you want. This particular program excludes the specialist wines and sparkling wines, though i think 75 wines is enough for most. Once you get your glass off you go with a basket of bread to counter the strong taste of some of the wines before trying the next lighter styles. There are places to wash glasses during tasting, but no bins for excess wines.
The wines can be bought subject to availability from 139 to 500kc per bottle. Thankfully most of the wines are matched by grape types so you can easily find the best style for you.
We were given an hour and a half for tasting and managed to try all. They advise 25 wines, but what the hell.
January is the time for wine sales and in the summer it could get very busy as it is set in a lovely location. February the Salon is closed, awaiting delivery of new wines etc. The wines we chose afterwards were about 10 pounds a bottle, but were superb. This salon is great as it allows you to separate the fine from the mediocre without having to drink the whole bottle. Czech wines can be great and with a little experimentation everyone will find something. The bohemia Sekt at 99K for sparkling wine lovers is a bargain available in most supermarkets. This would hold its own against many of europes more expensive finest.
Finally the information at the entrance relating to wine regions and history is in Czech only, as is most of the accompanying tasting booklet. The booklet allows space for tasting notes and gives details of producers etc. If you want to find out stockists and international delivery details of the wine, you will need the producers details as the wine salon cannot help with this.
