Having stayed at the Grand and the Best Western, I was looking for a decent hotel in Brno that didnt have too many "professional Ladies" in the bar, and that wasnt incredibly noisy.

The hotel is just off the market square and is lovely, I stayed in room 307 which was really nicely decorated with a fabulous vaulted ceiling.

The bar and restaurant were also good and the staff were really helpful, an ideal location and perfect especially for a female on business, would highly recommend.

We stayed in this hotel after spending 4 nights at their sister hotel U Pava in Prague. What a difference!! We booked a double de-luxe room in both hotels and expected the same standard of accomodation in each hotel (we realise that in old buildings there will always be some variation and always deliberately choose to stay in hotels with character) but were in for a shock after Prague.

Again we booked 4 nights (as with U Pava and Hotel Stekl, Hluboka) in the January of this year and confirmed booking 2 weeks before going. In their reply they confirmed the 10% discount for cash and announced that there were no parking spaces (free or otherwise) but only a garage for 350czk a night (their website states 3 parking spaces for free!)

Our room was the smallest possible.... less than 14" between the end of the bed and the wall, and 3ft from the window - this would have been fine apart from the fact that there was a portable air-conditioning unit that took up most of the space and had to be raised on a platform just to clear the bed! Because the unit had to be connected to the window the inner stained glass window was permanently open and whilst in bed unless the curtain was pulled and balanced across the unit we were on view to the block of apartments opposite. The room was dark and the hose on the unit not attached properly so we had some very uncomfortable nights as the weather was extremely warm - we were informed by the receptionist there was no other room available. Eventually we tracked down the Manager and discovered that on the last night there were 2 other rooms available, so we swapped to the room next door no 102. This was larger with 2 windows and an air-conditioning unit that was clear of the bed! When we returned from our meal we discovered that the curtains wouldn't close properly as the pulley system was broken and half the curtain runners were falling off the rail, then the glasses in the bathroom had obviously not been washed for weeks as there was a thick coating of toothpaste at the bottom of them. By then we were past caring and just couldn't wait to leave and move on to the wonderful Hotel Stekl.

On checking out we discovered the Receptionist had no knowledge of the 10% discount for cash and had to go and ask the Manager, even though I had a confirmation e-mail and it was on their website (U Pava mentioned it on their confirmation e-mail)

All in all a dismal stay in a dismal hotel with bad housekeeping and very variable rooms. I'm quite sure if we had been given a better room in the same category we would have been writing a slightly better review - but to give all the rooms in the old part of the hotel a "Double De-Luxe" rating defies comprehension!! Especially when the size varies between a "cupboard" - 101 and others that are alot more spacious.

It obviously caters for Business people and even though we were not staying during a Trade Fair, felt there was a distinct lack of interest in any of the individual resident's complaints. Another compaint to the Manager at the time was that we were not given a better room, on the basis that we had booked 8 months ahead for 4 nights and had also re-confirmed. His reply was that he would talk to the receptionists!

It certainly marred the middle of our holiday touring the Czech Republic and we tried to spend as much time as possible out of the hotel!

Thank goodness for our wonderful 4 night stays in each of the other hotels - U Pava in Prague and Hotel Stekl, Hluboka.

I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone!!

We chose this hotel based on reviews on here and the lonely planet, this was in the middle of our honeymoon tour of the czech republic. I have to say I was disappointed. When we arrived we were given a room which had not been cleaned, ok this is an easy mistake, we went down to reception to say we'd have a drink whilst they dealt with it (I thought perhaps a nice gesture may have been as a guest of the hotel, but no we were left to wander accross road). An hour later we were returned to be told they'd decided to change our room instead, and they had moved our luggage to the new room. Arrived at new room, no luggage, rang reception arrived 10 minutes later.

All in all first impressions lasted and can genuinely say we would not stay there again. We expected more from it.

Stayed here in 2003 on a business trip. Beautiful hotel with the friendliest staff I have ever come across. The rooms are superb (stained glass windows and paintings on the ceiling) and the place has real character. The in-house restaurant was fantastic and the quality of wines / food was of a very high standard.

This is basically one of the nicest places I have stayed and I fully recommend it to anyone, on either business or pleasure.
