We booked the room months in advance by e-mail and had a lovely reply from the Avalon staff with a promise they will give us their best room. When we arrived, we were very happy with the apartment they gave us and stayed there for couple of days. Until one evening they told us they had double-booked the apt. and we needed to move. The staff said they had multiple nice apatments nearby and we could choose one to stay in. We were suspicious, but finally, very reluctantly agreed.

The "nice apartments nearby" were nearby, yes, but there was nothing nice about them. They were in very poor condition. The walls were actually damp near the floor, so badly the wall paint had come off and there was a strong stench of mould in every one of them. We tried to choose the room with the least dampness and stayed there for that night (with all the windows open trying to get in some fresh air). We were furious! How can they treat customers like that?

Luckily we hadn't paid for the accommodation yet, so next morning we went back to the Avalon office and paid full price for the nights stayed in the nice apt., but only half price for the mouldy room. Then we checked in to another hotel for the rest of our stay.

I'm sorry, but I can't recommend Avalon House to anyone. The management clearly isn't trustworthy and not at all interested in providing customers a comfortable stay.

...shame we didn't get to stay there! The Avalon is in beautiful Novy Svet, about 40 mins scenic walk (uphill) from the centre of town. Unfortunately on arrival we were told that the hotel was overbooked, despite us reserving our room several months ago, and that we would have to stay elsewhere. We were offered a room in the New Town which we declined, as we had booked a B&B in the castle district to avoid the stag party crowds. The second offer was a pension "20 minutes walk closer to the centre" which turned out to be 20 minutes walk AWAY FROM the centre. When we complained we were told that it was a busy weekend and all the rooms in Prague were booked up. This being late Saturday afternoon we reluctantly accepted the offer and negotiated a 10% discount. Reading the other review on this site it seems likely that this is a fairly regular occurrence. In summary, don't assume that because you have booked a room in the Avalon that you will actually end up staying there!

This is a lovely place to stay for a reasonable rate. It is located on Novy Svet, above the Castle, which means you are not in the heart of the city, but rather in a beautiful neighborhood that seems lost in time, but just a short walk down the hill to the restaurants and attractions of the very desirable Malastrana neighborhood, not to mention Prague Castle. For going back up the hill, we took the tram! But if you cannot walk, this is not the place for you.
Our room was spacious and lovely and we paid around $85./night for a double. The courtyard of the buidling is also peaceful and attractive. Breakfast was served in a little private dining area adjacent to our room and we had a private bath. The main drawback was the managment, they are very nice but quite disorganized. We had actually rented an apt. downtown from them, but when we arrived with our luggage, the person with the key never showed up and we were stranded. After several hours we reached the management on the phone who said 'an agency" had double-booked the apt. and she had 'sent someone with a note to inform us' who never showed up. As compensation she offered us a "discount rate" on the B and B room at the Avalon, which we loved. Once we arrived, the management were very nice, and we were extremely happy with the Avalon.
