“Excellent hotel perfect view of the Square”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2006

Just got back from 3 nights at the Grand Hotel Praha. We had a lovely big room (213) with a view of the Astronomical Clock out of one window and the Tyn church out of the other. Enormous comfy bed. Everything was spotlessly clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast is great - fruit, cereal, muffins etc, bacon, sausages, eggs - fried, scrambled or boiled, ham or cheese croissants...we couldn't think of more you could want, although we noticed someone had brought their own rice krispies! The location is ideal and has a great atmosphere. The only slight - and it is slight - drawback is there is a bit of noise from the chairs scraping on the wooden floor of the cafe outside. Having said that, the cafe is a great place for coffee and a cake after your evening meal. As for restaurants, we enjoyed the 7 Angels - live gypsy music - and had excellent steaks at Metamorphis. Service was excellent in both restaurants, wine was a bit pricey in 7 Angels. We booked through A-Prague.com - they're very helpful, arranged transfers and everything.

  • Liked — Location, decor, comfort and cleanliness, helpful staff.
  • Disliked — Some noise from cafes outside.
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask for a room with a view - 213 is nice as it's dual aspect.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Praha for six nights (18 Aug through 24 Aug) and loved everything about this place. The decor is elegant yet understated, with lots of gleaming woods, green marble and brass fittings. The service is superb and the location can’t be beat. The staff is very friendly and attentive to your every request, and they also speak very good English. Our room (211) was huge and consisted of a very large bedroom/sitting area, a large separate hallway/dressing area with two big beautiful armoires for clothing storage, and two separate bathrooms...one with a tub and sink and the other with a large shower, toilet and bidet. Everything was immaculate and spotlessly clean. Even though we were right on the square, noise was not a problem. Simply closing the windows at night cut out everything except the muted sound of the clock. The breakfast buffet was fabulous and included lots of hot foods such as bacon, eggs and sausages, plus fresh fruits, cereals, pastries, cold meats, cheeses and tons of other things too numerous to list. We've tried to think of something negative about this hotel but can’t come up with a single thing. It's an extremely lovely place to stay in a very beautiful city, and we recommend it without hesitation to anyone visiting Prague.

  • Liked — The understated elegance of the rooms, the superb service and the great location.
  • Disliked — There was nothing to dislike.

We stayed at this hotel for three nights and it was fantastic. It was pretty expensive but hardly surprising considering the great view from our window of the Astronomical clock and the Old Town square. Plus, nothing was too much trouble for the staff and they were wonderful. They arranged for a driver to pick us up from the airport and back again. The room and bathroom were spotless, and we loved the decor. Despite the huge crowds gathered below the window on the hour to see the clock, we couldn't hear a thing when the window was shut so it wasn't a problem. And we had a much better view than they did! There was plenty to choose from for breakfast to set you up for the day, and the staff in the restaurant were very friendly. One of the best things about having the restaurant/cafe downstairs was the chance to have an enormous piece of cake and a cup of coffee late in the evening! They're open till midnight. We'd never seen so many different types of cake. There were a good number of restaurants along the street outside the hotel so you are right next to your room when you've finished your meal! I would definitely recommend this hotel if you can afford it, but make sure you get a room with a view!

  • Liked — Friendly staff, spotless room and fantastic views
  • Disliked — Nothing!
  • Tips/Secrets — Learn to speak a bit of Czech (please and thank you). Czechs are even nicer to you when you've made the effort!

I should start by saying that I never bother to write any sort of product/service reviews. Ever. My experience in this hotel has compelled me to alter my habits. This hotel is great. The location is simply second to none: right on the old town square directly across from the astronomical clock. You get to smugly watch all the people watching the clock. When you don't want to hear the clock, close both sets of windows and you get instant quiet. Our room was immaculate with a king size bed and separate shower/baths. The hotel has wireless, an office area with computer, a sauna, great breakfast, and an outdoor/indoor cafe at the ground level. Oh, and for some reason Tripadvisor has the price at 500 dollars a night, that is WAY off it is actually about 200 a night. Money well spent.
