“Grand Hotel Praha - Excellent location but not as grand as we were hoping for!”
Reviewed May 11, 2013

Booked the Grand Deluxe room online through their website, secured with deposit, rest of payment on check out.

Location: In touristy but lively Old Town Square

Pros
- Central location with many attractions in the vicinity
- Big and spacious, nicely decorated with antique-looking furniture; the room was atmospheric enough
- Secure building with smart card access
- Great view of Old Town Hall but the view of the clock is not as good as advertised in their website for this room type
- Breakfast selection was good and the location Cafe Mozart is great

Cons
- No lifts, and the room was a trek up and down staircases. This would be difficult for those with heavy and large luggage or with walking disability.
- View: The Astronomical Clock could be seen from our Grand Deluxe room but views (see Tripadvisor member photos) were not consistent with the view shown on the Grand Praha website for this room type.
- Bed was a thin mattress with single-size comforters. Still we slept okay, tired after a day's exploration.
- Safe was small and squarish and cannot accommodate a laptop or DSLR camera.
- Tub with hand shower but there is no tall hook to hang it on.
- Weak toilet flush
- Wifi could not be accessed in the room throughout our stay. We informed staff everyday but we were told daily that they were looking to fix the problem. It never worked.

Deal breaker
The Grand Praha Hotel is not as grand as we had expected, and in our experience had more cons than pros. However, it might still be attractive to visitors looking for accommodations with views of the Astronomical Clock, just manage your expectations.

Should we find ourselves in Prague again, we'd probably look for other accommodation options.

Room Tip: Be in Cafe Mozart early for your breakfast so you can grab a table by the window with best views of...

Dear Brad,

first of all let me thank you, for taken your time and writing such a long respond to our accommodation, with all the pros and cons!
I am actually glad, that your review has got some pros, such as a great view and lovely breakfast and furniture!

On the other hand, there is definitely more cones, which I would like to go through again and address each and every of them:
1.) You have stated in your review, that there is no Elevator access, which is not completely true! We do have an Elevator access in the main building of our hotel, it is in the part of the hotel, where you have had your breakfast. We are also unable to install an elevator in the older part of the hotel, as this would alter the buildings original condition, but we have got very helpful reception staff, that will always assist all our guests with their suitcases, so no one has to carry their suitcases up to their rooms in the other part of our hotel and disable guests will always be accommodate in the main building with an elevator access. And also our guests are welcome to write which part of our two parts of hotel, they would like to be accommodate, if in the main one with an elevator access or the other part of Apostolic Residence, without the Elevator access, more quit part of our hotel. We will make our best to meet their needs. All this information is clearly explained on our website.

2.) Yes, you are absolutely right, not all of our views can be the same, some are directly facing the Astronomical Clock , these rooms are within the category of Grand Deluxe rooms and some are facing other angle of Astronomical Clock, these rooms are within the category of Deluxe rooms, but over all, all of these view are amazing and one and only in Prague and you have stated that yourself in your pros section ( Great views )
3.) I can understand, that the single size comforters, can be a problem and not as comfortable.
4.) Thank you for the impulse about a size of our safe, I have not came across of a problem with that yet. I would also recommend to store valuable object's on our reception.
5.) We have got some rooms with shower's and some with bathtub's, I can understand that having shower in the bath can be hassle, but would not select this as a con.
6.) Weak flushing in WC is a problem which we know about, but this is due to the buildings original condition, so we ask our guests to be very careful, what they flush down the toilet.
7.) I would like to apologize about the WI-FI, we are aware of this technical problem during the dates of your stay because we passed on to an another system IPTV which also includes the WI-FI access. I would like to ensure our guests that WI-FI works flawlessly in all our hotel rooms and other parts of the hotel now.

Over all I would like to thank you ones again for taken your time and writing your review!
This is very important for us and I would like to assure you, that we take each and every of your and our other guests review's very seriously as we can only improve and provide the best possible accommodation and most pleasant home away from home, for all our guest and that is also our motivation and a goal.

Your sincerely,
Lenka Kotalikova

We had a lovely big room with a huge bathroom overlooking the old square and the clock. Perfect except for a literally rock hard bed that made sleeping difficult and the four huge flights of stairs to get up there.
Nice breakfast. Only slight annoyance was that we fell for the taxi ripoff from the main station when we arrived and ended up paying like four times the normal fare. Wishing to avoid this when we left we asked the hotel to ring a taxi for us. On the morning we were told the fare which was only slightly less than the rip off fare. Of course they'd got us the hotel transfer car not a normal taxi so therefore the big price.
Loved Prague and otherwise a good hotel

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main building if you can't walk up miles of stairs. Maybe try for a softer...

Dear Sir/Madam,

thank you for your resond to our accommodation!
I am awfully sorry, that our bed was to hard for you, but I would like to assure you, tat we have selected beds, that has been proven to be the best one of all and it is very hard to please everyone, so I do apologize about that!
I am also very sorry to read about that taxi rip off, that is a shame and it should not hapend, such a bed welcome to the country. All we can do is offer our guests a pick up transfer, which is 20 EUR from the Railway Station and 30 EUR from the Airport, price is per car/one way, which is about a normal price per this way, not much more, that you would normaly pay.

Ones again, thank you for your respond to our accommodation!
Your sincerely,
Lenka Kotalikova

We were there for three nights - making our dream of visiting Prague come true. The hotel was perfectly located - if a bit too discreet as it hides behind a restaurant called El Toro Negro (next review). The room was very large and clean - if a bit tricky to access when you've been walking so much during the day - there is a narrow and steep flight of stairs to climb. The Café Mozart (breakfast room) was like a beautiful doll's house with walls covered in rich fabrics and an antique feel. Buffet breakfast was nothing special (except they did carry MY favourite kind of tea) but included in the room rate. Reception staff very kind, patient and helpful, this is more of a family-run hotel than a business one which makes it personalized and cosy.

You couldn't ask for a better location. Located in the center of old town square across from the astrological clock, the hotel has all the necessary amenities plus a real Prague charm. The room was well kept and included a breakfast buffet(minor point...the coffee was sub par, especially for a european hotel) which should suit all tastes. Overall, great experience!

We booked the presidential suite, best views outside and a extreme large, but becouse of the double windows, very quiet inside. We had the best citytrip ever here in Praha. The restaurant, we didn't try is because of the wide range of restaurants in and around the square. Breakfast is 'like German style' good quality and a lot to choose of.

The plus points for this hotel were its location, the staff and general appearance. However there are two parts to the hotel, the main building and a second building accessed via your room key card just a few yards away. We stayed in an attic room at the top and back of this second building which had no lift and took just over 3 minutes to walk to from the hotel reception. This room would be unsuitable for some people. Having said that we loved the room, it was light and airy with a huge bathroom and very quite providing a very restful sleep but there were a couple of small sky lights high up in the ceiling with no coverings. I can imagine that the room would get very light quite early in the summer months. The location is perfect just opposite the Astronomical Clock with lot of places to eat and drink right on your doorstep and all the sites were easily reached on foot. The hotel staff were very helpful and both the main building and ours were well kept. I would certainly recommend this hotel but maybe check where your room is if it’s important to you.

Dear Sir/Madam,

thank you for your respond to our accommodation.
I am glad, that over all you have enjoyed your stay with us, we are aware, that the other part of our hotel can be unconfortable for some of our guests with all the stairs, but some of our guests do prefere the good night sleep and do not mind to walk because of it up and down, but I do understand what you mean. Ther is a note about the stair way on our webside.

The reviews on Tripadvisor are generally accurate relating to this hotel. It is a beautiful building with great views in a great location. The room (101) was a little tired (the shower leaked, mattresses slightly uncomfortable) but was spacious and very good value for money. The staff were pleasant and courteous but the buffet was a little lacking the later you left it for breakfast. I have to add though that as soon as you asked for something apple juice etc the staff replenished it immediately.

One of the other reviews on this hotel makes note of the fact that this is not the hotel for long lie ins! We were woken up every night by rowdy revellers at 3 or 4am, this is out if the hotels control but you may want to pack your ear plugs!!

All in all a nice stay but having stayed in Prague several times I think I would stay elsewhere next time.

Dear Sir/Madam,

thank you for your review and as you have stated in your review, there is little we can do about the noise outside, as we are situated directly on the main Old Twon Square, with double glaze windows and I am sorry to hear, that you would not stay with us again.
