“Eat the breakfast....”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

this is a the best communal hotel I have ever stayed in. I slept in the 5 bed female dorm- which is really a massive bedroom with 5 beds in and a en-suite bathroom. It was super comfortable, super private and never once did I get anxious about sharing a room with 4 strangers.

The breakfasts are incredible- if they offer it to you.. just take it- its worth the 7 euro.

It takes around 20 mins to walk into town.

The best thing at Miss Sophie's is the helpfulness of the staff. Also it has the kind of location that is great for an expensive city: near a subway and several tram lines but a few stops outside of the very center.

Our double room on the top floor under the sloping roof was large and comfortable enough, but somewhat too odd for our tastes. Most seriously there was not a power outlet anywhere near the desk (though the staff did find us an extension cord on request). Also the layout was challenging, the main part of the room had just one very bright light, WiFi reception was low, the bathroom had a motion sensor rather than a light switch, the air conditioning could be turned on only from the front desk, ... We should say however that a friend with whom we were traveling found much more to like about her room on a lower floor.

Other notes: Breakfast (for an extra charge) is good but not the usual buffet; you have to reserve one of the small number of spaces available for a particular time, then wait for your main dish to be prepared. Some lockers are available in the basement for early arrival/late checkout, and the staff will watch some larger bags for you.

Overall it is a well-run hotel but you do need to be tolerant of some quirks or unexpected features.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main building but not on the top floor.

Stay for 4 nights and was surprised how clean and modern the furnitures are when stepped into the room. Well-equipped kitchen (though if there is Salt and Oil it would be better). Staff are nice overall and they are willing to give advice on sightseeing in Prague. The downside is it is a bit far from the old town (20mins walk) and the lift was broken when I stayed (they sent people to help us carry luggage though).

We stayed here, just like every other Australian in Prague (or so it seemed) for 2 nights and we enjoyed it. The rooms are large, the prices are decent, the breakfast(an extra AUD 7.50) was delicious and ample (and they have Rooibos tea in the rooms! yum!), the location was good and the staff were very, very friendly!

However, there are a few little things about this hotel that soured me after a short while. It is noisy: the walls don't deaden the sound of, say, people coming back at 1 am or repairmen doing work at 7 am. We were on the 1st floor, with out window facing the courtyard, which is also a smoking area. So whenever anyone went outside for a ciggie, we had to close our windows. VERY annoying.

The airconditioning is not controlled through the room: you have to ring the front desk to get them to turn it on or off. The bathroom is fantastic, with very generous little shampoos etc, and a great shaving mirror, but there was no shelf in the shower! This may be a small complaint, but it is this kind of small oversight that annoys people. This has been mentioned by other reviewers, as have the very flimsy pillows.

Miss Sophie's could be a truly great place to stay, but all these small problems make it only average in my opinion.

Miss Sophie's is clean, well located in the New Town, and has fairly reasonable prices. I stayed in a "Private Double" room, which was basic, offering decent storage, okay lighting (for the light fixtures that actually worked), and a refrigerator. There was a small tea kettle with one tea bag and some coffee that did not get replenished after use. The building is not very well sound insulated internally, but as it is both a hotel and hostel, groups of drunk hostellers occasionally made quite a racket both inside and immediately outside the building in the wee hours.

The reason why I DO NOT recommend the hotel is that the lights (and fan) in the bathroom turn on and off automatically with a motion sensor. On day one, this seemed like a quirky nuisance. On the subsequent days of my stay, this was an increasing stress, as the lights constantly went out whilst in the shower, on the toilet, in front of the mirror, etc... Waving my arms around only slightly helped, particularly as shower steam seemed to block the motion sensor!

Breakfasts were not as advertised in a video on Miss Sophie's website (a changing daily menu and fresh smoothies). It was the same every day: continental offerings, some with fruit flies swarming around, and/or a few hot choices--pancakes, eggs, etc. All of it rather rough on the stomach (and given the light situation in the bathroom, this was especially frustrating!).

Service could be improved. People at the font desk often grumbled when asked for assistance. The housekeeper did not change the sheets until this was specifically requested at the front desk, even though there was a sign to leave on the door to request this. The problem seems to be that the sign for clean sheets is in English but the housekeeper does not speak English!

NB: avoid Minimarket Vecerka across the street. They do not list prices and blatantly rip off tourists. Better to go up the street to the Minimarket near the metro station.

Miss Sophie's is a great hostel! In actual fact, it's more a boutique hotel than a hostel. The rooms were spacious, modern and well designed. The bathrooms were excellent! The staff were polite and the dining are in the basement was superb. The food was delicious and it was a great way to meet and chat to other travellers. I shared a room with two other travellers but that was not so bad. It is ideally placed very close to the station and good security. I have and will again recommend this place!
