“Excellent Hotel, excellent location.”
Reviewed August 31, 2012

Had a short midweek break in Prague and stayed at the Iron Gate Hotel for three nights. Every member of staff that we talked to was helpful and courteous.

Our room was located on the top floor where we were not disturbed by any of the noise outside. I agree with a previous poster that the hotel website should warn of all the stairs but, hey, it's a medieval building and the charm of it is its quirky character. I think we found four different ways from our room to reception.

The breakfast was good, with a selection of various foods.

Thye location was perfect, 2 minutes from the Old Town Square with all of its attractions including the Astronomical Clock (a must do visit), 5 minutes from Charles Bridge and ten minutes from Wenceslas Square.

All in all an excellent hotel, we were very impressed!!

Room Tip: Rooms on the fourth floor are quirkier and quieter.

The hotel is very well located and good, however it is necessary to make clear that it is not a five star hotel as its owners advertise on the website. I read many complaints in this respect about the hotel and they are true. Although good, the hotel corresponds to a three star standard in developed countries. Overcome this issue of honesty, I step to rapporteur my good experience at this hotel. Since the arrival we were very well attended and received a superior room to what we booked at no additional charge. We received a royal suite at the top of the building. This type of room offers a separate living room and a bedroom with a king bed on the mezzanine level which it arrives via a stair well inclined. Our royal suite was big and decorated with wooden painted ceilings from 14th to 16th century. The bathroom was small but equipped with jacuzzi (it was not working. It was old and bad maintained). Something unacceptable in a luxury hotel, but I did not paid for it, I received a superior room: no complaint! The breakfast is served in a charming room with vaulted ceiling. However the quality of the products is poor. Another problem was the air conditioning. It was not possible to regulate or shut down it. To turn it off being inside the room it is necessary to open a window. It turns off when you open windows. On the other hand, the internet (via cable borrowed from reception) is good or able to work. In a nutshell: the highlight of the hotel is its perfect location just a few steps from the central square, the bridges and the breweries. Worth it, no doubt.

As mentioned in many reviews the location of this hotel is excellent, but the nearby vodka bar did get quite loud late at night. This required the closing of windows and prevented us from enjoying fresh air throughout the night. I booked a “Junior Royal Suite” and found the room charming and a bit awkward at the same time. It was located on the top floor and was clearly a converted attic. This was a plus in that I was as high up as possible above (4-5 floors) the street noise, but again, this was not high enough to escape the rowdy patrons of the nearby bar. The room had character and was actually two separate levels with a small living room and bathroom downstairs and a bedroom and second bath upstairs. The bathrooms were clean and quite modern, the living room, however, provided just one single chair to relax on. There was plenty of room for multiple chairs or even a sofa, but the lack of furniture meant that the room was only useful for one individual to relax in. Getting to this room entailed riding an elevator up about four floors then crossing the building to a stairway that led down a half a floor then ascending another stairway up a floor. If you have trouble with stairs or will be hauling a lot of stuff to your room this is not a room for you. The staff was friendly and food decent. I did get the impression that other rooms in this hotel were probably much more conventional and probably nicer, but this is just a hunch as I did not see any other rooms. If you are looking for a room similar to the large American chains, this hotel is not for you. If you want to experience a several hundred year old building that has done a fairly good job with providing the modern conveniences (i.e. good a/c, nice bathrooms) then the Iron Gate may work for you. Oh yeah the clock. Please do yourself a favor and learn the history of the astronomical clock before you view it. It’s the history of this timepiece that truly makes it special.

The hotel is located just around the corner from the famous clock and in the middle of the old town. Great location with walking distance to almost everything.
The rooms was cosy, nice and clean and the service was top.
The breakfastbuffet was great and there was a lot of different things to choose between.
Can only recommend this hotel.

We stayed here for 5 nights from 2nd Aug-7th. We originally booked a deluxe room but I upgraded to a Junior Royal suite after looking more carefully at the photos on the website. We were given room 106 and it was great. Useful kitchen area, lovely spotless bathroom and functional living area. Air-con was a godsend in the heat that we had.
Hotel staff were very helpful in recommending and booking restaurants. Breakfast was good - a large selection of choices. (Didn't use the restaurant at other times so cannot comment).
The location was perfect - so near to the old town square yet felt removed and peaceful when you wanted to get away.
Only issue would be that the wi-fi signal was not good enough to reach the rooms but it was perfectly adequate in the courtyard.
I would definitely recommend this hotel based on my experience there.

Room Tip: A junior royal suite is probably just right for a couple. People seem disappointed when they go for...

First the good news. The location near the old town square is great. The courtyard is good and the cafe serves large portions of very good food.

Now for the bad news – and unfortunately there is quite a lot of it. This place sounded so good on its web site and there are so many good reviews our hopes were high of getting something quite special. This leads me to believe not all the Royal Suites have the problems ours had but there were some serious problems with the one we had and we ended up very disappointed.

The bathroom. Not at all good. A jacuzzi with a the only shower being a shower head attached very low over it. The shower was very difficult to use and the contortions required to use it made showering a little dangerous. No shower curtain so it was easy to soak the floor adding to the chances of slipping. Overall just not at all acceptable from a hotel claiming such high standards.

The bedroom had sloping walls (was in apex of a roof) with little space either side of the bed making getting in and out of bed annoying with stooping required and it was easy to bash the wall. It was a king bed but there really was not enough room for it (see picture).
The stairs to the bedroom were VERY steep and more like a ladder. Anyone with a mobility problem could have a real difficulty – the hotel SHOULD ADVISE OF THIS WHEN BOOKING. The mattress protector had a brown (? what) sizeable stain on it.

There was a worse problem with the ‘stairs’ (? ladder). The top left support bar was broken. It had sheared off at the base and was just dangling from the handrail. It was DANGEROUS. We pointed this out when being shown the room. We were told there was no other room and it would be mended tomorrow. When we came back the next evening after a good day out the mending consisted of a folded piece of cardboard shoved under the support bar. This did NOT make it any less dangerous and was a stupid annoying useless thing to do. It was not mended during our 4 night stay. To leave it so unsafe was a huge failing.

The lounge was spacious but not plush and there was no wow factor. The 14th century beams did not make up for the drab furnishings showing a lot of wear. The carpet was ripped, a meter long tatty edge. The table had lots of stains and much of the veneer had gone where spills had happened. When the room was serviced the stains were covered with magazines! The floor was dirty on arrival and some mess was still there when we left – it was never properly cleaned. A nice couch but not much else to say good things about. A kitchen area with lots of rather cheap looking empty cupboards, a microwave and a fridge. No view but we did not expect one. There were glasses but they were all dirty and were not cleaned during our stay. Air con was noisy. Plug point by mirror (only one useful to dry hair) did not work.

A lot is made of the beams. I do wonder then why they have so much white paint on them - the paiting job did not seem does seem to not protected the beams and it does not seem to havebeen done very well. I would not paint my walls without protecting bits I did not want paint to get on.

Breakfast incuded a lot of waiting for coffee and a low quality buffet. By the 4th day I was fed up with it.

There were so many problems with this Royal Suite I would not stay here again. This hotel may have rooms that work but our room had far too many flaws. This hotel really let us down.
I cannot say this hotel meets the stardards it claims to have.

Room Tip: Try another room - not the one we had!

We stayed here for 3 nights at end of June. The service was excellent, the room was charming.
The location was perfect, so near to the Old Town Square. I would stay here again if I went back to Prague.
