“Good looking, but only skin-deep”
Reviewed April 6, 2013 via mobile

On the good side, the location is on an attractive street (Nerudova) and being on a hill, you get good views of the city and castle from the rooms (ours was on the top floor).

But the location is far from old town square (30-min leisurely walk). Tram stop is 5-10 min away, but metro is one stop further, so no convenient transport to town center. Uphill walk at the end of a long day is tiring :-(

Inside, the hotel looks attractive, though a bit claustrophobic. Reception was friendly but they messed up my pre-payment and wanted to charge a second time upon check-out. Missed room service one day. The wait staff at breakfast was pretty rough -- never smiled, did not take drink orders for long intervals, etc! Actually, friendliness is not a forte of this city in general, as everyone is out to make a buck from you and wants to hustle and gouge...

The room was split in two levels and was reasonably furnished, though again felt tight squeezed in terms of space. Wi-fi did not work initially, but they fixed it the next day. Hot water ran out the first day, but again, they fixed the boiler the next day. One toilet had no bath mat on the cold floors. Toiletries were sparse.

Breakfast was basic. Croissant, white and wheat bread; packaged jam and butter; one type of cheese and meat (ham); scrambled eggs and sausage (hot); open yoghurt (plain and strawberry); cereal and milk; sliced veggies (cucumber, tomato, peppers); juice (orange, apple, vitamin). Croissants were quite good (crisp and a bit warm), but the rest got boring from the second day. Worst was that espresso drinks had to be paid for (every other hotel we visited had self-service espresso, cappuccino, etc) and the server was never to be seen.

In summary, it was an ordinary experience for the price we paid, and the location was inconvenient enough that I would not recommend this place.

Dear rajeevfromca,

We thanks for your stay in our hotel and we are sorry that everything was not perfect.

We would like to reply just to few question to give to all guests that visit us best indea possible about our building.

Our hotel is small (17 rooms) each one different from other, is an old historical building but all rooms and corridors are naturaly illuminated with large windows.

Your room was on top floor, and like all our rooms, all bathrooms are provided with Floor Heating individually controlled.

Unfortulately we weren t informed regarding pre-payment (normally your agency doen´t apply prepaid policy) so this is reason because our receptionists prepared you bill. I remember that she called me immediatelly and we solve the problem in few seconds.

Regarding Coffee, we serve selection of teas and finest Americano coffee directly on table.

We wish to offer you a better services in your future stay in Prague, we hope with us.

Best regards,

SIMONE C.

Just got back from a 3 night stay at the Golden Wheel. The hotel is lovely very clean and quiet, our room was at the front and was quiet with the double windows, nice and warm, spacious with a large flat screen TV mini bar and large bathroom with bath and shower. The room also had painted ceilings which added to the quaintness of the hotel. Free WIFI in the room also which was great!

Breakfast was continental and for the price of the room was absolutely fine. it was served until 10.30 so you could have a bit of a lie in.

Mini bar prices were reasonable which made a change for a hotel and there was a discount on any food and drinks purchased in the hotel. Great location for the castle and also to walk down to Charles Bridge and old town. I preferred staying in Mala Strana to old town it seemed quieter other than during the day when everyone was walking up to the castle.

Only improvement would be more English TV channels got a bit sick of just watching the news!

Would definately stay there again if went back to Prague.

First of all the location is perfect for exploring the city on foot or by the great public transport network. Streets and pavements are often cobbled, so it is advisable for the ladies to wear flat shoes rather than heels. The hotel is a short walk (less than 5 mins from the Charles Bridge) and just a few steps away from the Prague Castle on an incline. It is in a quiet and safe area of the city, located close to many international embassies (Italian/Romanian/US embassies are just a short walk away)

The hotel itself is in a historic building that has been tastefully refurbished and despite its age it has a lift, in a glass-covered central courtyard which is welcome after the walk up the hill from the City centre.

We stayed in room 307 on the third floor of the hotel overlooking the castle at the back of the building (the street "Nerudova" is not busy in any case). Our room was spacious and beautifully clean. We had a small office nook, and a bathroom with a smallish bath. My only comment is that the bath is quite high to step into which you need to be able to do as it is a shower-over-bath arrangement. The room had Wifi access, a small TV and a mini bar and tea and coffee making facilities.

The thing that makes this place extra special are the lovely attentive staff, they really can't do enough for you, and a lovely added touch is the chocolates and a rose on the bed after the room has been cleaned.

Yes, there are some very minor shortcomings for a 4* - towels are a little small, double is 2 singles pushed together which is not to everyone's liking, tv channels are limited... oh and there's no pool or fitness facilities but if you are looking for that kind of hotel then go to the big conglomerates.

Also breakfast is local fare and you have to experiment, and not expect a full English or decent tea. If you are that bothered about tea, I suggest you put some teabags in your case!

Overall superb service, superb value and perfect for a short or long stay. Go - you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Rear-facing rooms are better for peace and quiet, you can even have your windows open for more air...

This is a lovely hotel full of charm in an excellent location and provides an excellent level of service. We stayed for a four night break over New Year and its an experience we wont forget. Our room 410 was spacious, imaculate and from our terrace/balcony we had a majestical view of the castle which appeared to be just a stones throw away.

The little touches that make this hotel special are indeed the the informative slips on the breakfast tables giving guests the daily weather forecast, tips on whats on locally and the friendly professional staff that couldnt be more helpful. Also on our return to our rooms on the 31/12/12 we were greeted with a complimentary bottle of champagne from the hotel to welcome in the New Year. How thoughtful.

We ate at U tri Houslicik and Cowboys Steak House both on the same street as the hotel both very good food but the service and menu choice at Cowboys was by far outstanding we had a lovely evening there.

We rang in 2013 aboard the Jazz boat which we booked through the Prague Experience. The 5 hours flew past with complimentary drinks on arrival, a plentiful buffet and delightful background music. As the bells rang out we gathered on deck clutching our complimentary champagne to toast in the New Year and watch the most amazing fireworks display above the St Charles Bridge a fabulous start to 2013!!!!

I had a wonderful 9-night stay at the Golden Wheel. The location was excellent for sightseeing on foot, it was close to all the sights and to public transportation. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was comparatively large. The hotel itself is in a historic building and has character and ambiance. Restaurants and cafes for every budget and taste are within a few minutes walk. You are located in the diplomatic area of the city and just a few blocks from the castle. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: Generally a quiet area, but get a room off the street if any noise disturbs you.
