When you visit the castle you will also be able to visit the cathedral. The castle is not just one building but almost a town in itself. It is a very interesting place to visit and there is so much to see even outside of the castle grounds.

This is the castle district of Prague. It includes the castle, cathedral and gardens and is a must see for any visit to Prague. We had the opportunity to visit the area twice while in Prague and enjoyed thoroughly each time.

I recommend a walk that would start from the main gate at the very top of Hradcany through the entrance to the castle grounds. This is the highest point, and you can get there by tram, then it's only going to be down hill. Descend through Villa Richter and down the castle stairs towards the river.

Hradcany is the area around the castle. Includes not only architecture of the nearby buildings but also view points, lovely parks, and historical monuments. The area is popular, and there is a likelihood of tourist crowds. The shops, cafes might even speak english. Nice views towards the river and the old town (try a lookout by the Petrin hill, towards the river). Dont forget to visit the Strahov Monastery, its gorgeus and the libary its stunning! Not much traffic here, more like a pedestrain zone, safe for all, even though there r coblestones mostly. Really, dont miss this one! Take your camera and some time to suck in the history...

Six of us came to Hradcany (Prague Castle). We spent an hour or so wandering through, then joined the free tour associated with our Hop On-Hop Off two day ticket. The tour was done by a spectacularly good young French girl, Caroline, whose knowledge of English, history and her humour made for a wonderful couple of hours.

The highlights of the castle include the three courtyards with their splendid surrounding buildings, the Old Royal Palace, Golden Lane, the Powder Tower, St George's Chapel, the gardens and, of course, St Vitus Cathedral started in 1344 but not finished until 1929.

The hourly changing of the guard was worth watching, if only for trying hard not to laugh at how sloppy (and unpunctual) they were!

Hugely crowded, but a great day out.
