“Not a 5 star hotel”
Reviewed August 20, 2013

We just spent 4nights at the President Hotel in Prague. It most definitely is not a 5 star hotel---maybe 3 stars. It does have a few things going for it. The location is very convenient. Just a short walk to the old town square. Also the buffet breakfast was very good with a lot of choices. We had a room that had a great view of the castle and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was large but the hotel did not give you bars of soap, only liquid. Also there were no tissues in the room. The decor of the room was very dated and tired. The worst part of it all was that the a/c hardly worked at all. The room was hot and stuffy. It did not matter that the thermostat was on its lowest and the fan on its highest setting. Almost no air and none of it cold was coming out. DO NOT STAY HERE IN THE SUMMER. Other reviewers have said the front desk staff was rude. I do not think this was so. I think they are not comfortable conversing in English. I want information on tram tickets and the girl behind the desk didn't understand what a tram was. Milo, the bellman spoke much better English and was very helpful. They should put him behind the desk (or let him run the hotel). Not only does this hotel not have 5 star amenities, it has no amenities.

Room Tip: There are no good rooms if the weather is hot

Save yourself some disappointment and don't book this hotel for a summer stay. The hotel does not have the cooling capacity to cool the hotel during the summer, and your room could easily end up permanently over 26C. I even tried moving from a west-facing room to a smaller room on the south side of the hotel which was just as bad.

The room lobby and room décor are dated and austere. (The hotel was rebuilt in 2003 after the 2002 flood on the Vltava which is 100m away...is this really the best they could do in 2003?) Experienced plumbing/water issues in all three of our rooms. On the plus side, rooms are very quiet...you'll only hear the pathetic fan of your overworked and ineffective room air conditioner (the thermostat of which will be set to 18C, fan-level 3) failing to cool your room.

The "Fitness Center" mentioned on the PDF hotel brochure from their website turns out to be a place where you can get Thai massages for prices ranging up to 5280 CzK. There are NO exercise facilities of any kind.

Staff was a little on the testy side but generally competent.

In summary, while the hotel was acceptable, when I'm vacationing in the summer, I want my hotel room to be a cool sanctuary in which I can quickly recover my energy and get me ready for my next outing. I literally ended up with a wet cloth draped over me half the time I was in the room. Adding it up, there is NO WAY I would call this a five-star hotel. There are many Old Town options - you can do much, much better.

Room Tip: If traveling in summer, avoid east- or west-facing rooms. Or better yet. avoid this hotel entirely i...

In Prague for 3 days with a tour group. Hotel is well-placed right across from the Volta River and a quick 5-7 minute walk to the old town center. Room is clean and reasonably sized. Free wifi!

Breakfast is okay. Good enough to sustain until lunch!

Lovely hotel on the Vltava--modern, clean, located perfectly for visitors who wish to walk to attractions. The front desk staff are willing but reticent--perhaps because they have limited English and we have no Czech. Our breakfast was included with the room and was delicious. We'll stay again.

So, it may not look or feel like a five star hotel in the states, but the location was nice. We were able to walk everywhere we wanted, including the St. Charles Bridge, the Pargue Castle and the city center. The rooms were OK with comfortable beds. Our room had a nice view overlooking the river. The A/C in the room didn't seem to work very well during our stay, but it was not to hot that it was uncomfortable. We were able to save a good amount by booking it through Hotwire. Staff was not very friendly and atmosphere in the lobby was dated and boring. If I had not got this hotel on a discount, I would be a bit more upset that it is rated five stars. I would give it a 3.5 out of 5 if possible.
