“Nothing great, far from the city center.”
Reviewed October 13, 2006

This hotel is nowhere near the city center or any of the tourist spots. It is in a residential area. The walk to the to red line subway from the hotel is about a 10 minute walk, but you can also take the tram, which is just a few meters from the subway. Much nicer as it is above ground and takes you right to Charles Bridge and old town.

The rooms are small and nothing to talk about. We had two twin beds put together and one was broken, all in all I was not very impressed with the rooms or the hotel. You can find a pension closer to the city center for the same price.

The breakfast was very good, all types of eggs, bacon, sausages, fruits, breads, cold cuts, desserts. I think the breakfast was the only good thing about this hotel.

Still this city is so beautiful no matter where you stay you are bound to have fond memories of this city.

Location:
The hotel is located in a more residential area. About a 7-10 min. walk to a subway stop. A little creepy of a walk a night as the streets are all but pitch black and deserted. No real restaurants around.
Room:
Very small, as expected. If you've never been to Europe (yes you Mr. American!), all rooms and especially bathrooms are small. Instead of a queen we got 2 twins pushed together. In the morning it was quite noisey as the building next door was being rennovated. Tiny TV with only CNN in English. Nice breakfast in the morning. Eggs, sasuage/bacon, cereal, juices, breads, yogurt, cakes, etc. Okay coffee. The shower only had a handle held nozzle that could not be left on the wall, made showering a little awkard. Nice little place in the front to have a smoke and a coffee/beer, althought I'd probably just go into town. It met or exceeded all my expectations set by the good price.
Service:
All service was great. Very helpful staff that spoke pretty good English. Great with directions or making locals calls for you incase you don't speak Czech.

We have just returned from a four night stay in this hotel and we would definitly use it again. It is spotlessly clean and the decor is beautiful. The rooms are clean, comfortable beautifully decorated and with all requirements. Staff speak english to a certain degree ad are all very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is excellent, with just about anything you could want. If you leave the table hungry then you must be hard to suit. We also had an evening meal on one night. This was excellent, the food was beautifully. The service was just the right pace without feeling either rushed or ignored. The hotel is only 5 minutes walk from the metro and 3 stops from St Wensleslas Square. The tram service is also 5mins away. The cost of a ticket to the centre is 14czk. so its very cheap. I would recommend this hotel if you like peace and quiet at night. Warm, clean, comfortable rooms. A good breakfast to start the day and polite friendly staff without paying through the nose for it!

I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights (28th & 29th Jan). After reading the reviews here, I almost suggested to my partner to cancel but didn't. I think some of the reviews are a little unfair. The hotel would not get four stars in other cities but I believe the Czech system is based on self-grading. The location was handy, 5 minutes to the metro and quieter than the centre (a 3 day pass on all transport costs about 7 euro). Also, eating out is much cheaper in Vysehrad than in the more touristy parts of the old town/new town. The room was warm (it was -10C outside!) and clean and breakfast was hearty. The staff were polite and helpful if a little curt but I think this is more of a cultural style than rudeness. There's a mini-bar and safe in the room and a portable tv which has CNN & Eurosport in English. Only problem was the shower over the bath did not have a hook on the wall so you had to hold it while showering!

We stayed for three nights between Christmas and New Year's Eve, renting two rooms (triple and double). This was part of an Air France package. The rooms were small but my wife found them charming. The bathrooms were even smaller, but functional and clean. The beds were also small, with very soft mattreses that my teenagers hated.

As others have noted, the hotel is not close to the main tourist attractions, but I found that the walk downtown was not bad (about two miles). I enjoyed visiting the nearby Vysehrad fortress, which had some commanding views of the river.

My wife and kids took taxis to and from downtown on a few occcasions. The cost generally was around $11 per ride though several cab drivers tried to overcharge us. There seemed to be no set rate and not a single driver used a meter.

Breakfast at the hotel was always the same, but with a wide variety of food. The quality was passable. Dinner, on the other hand, was excellent.

We dealt with three different desk employees, all of whom spoke English. Two were friendly and helpful, one was rude. As we were going to the airport in a taxi, the rude one called the taxi driver, insisting that he turn around and bring us back because my wife allegedly had not paid for a book as we left. The employee refused to accept my wife's explanation that she indeed had paid. The employee had not noticed my wife putting the money on the counter because she was busy gabbing on the phone. The encounter unfortunately left a sour taste in my wife's mouth.

Two of us stayed at the Hotel Vysehrad for 2 nights. Upon arrival, we were very jetlagged and were treated very rudely when we reached the hotel. We were told not to use the elevator and had to lug our suitcases to the top floor on our own--even when the elevator was working. The room was not the best: the bedsheets didn't completely cover the mattress, the pillows didn't smell quite right, and something in the room was musty. The hotel staff, even though they spoke good English, were very unhelpful with questions regarding where to find a bank that accepted travelers checks and where to eat. We were returning to Prague to live (we moved into our apartment the day we checked out), and knew several people. One of our friends visited us in our room one evening and the hotel staff gave us a very rude, accusatory lecture on their unpublicized "no-guests" policy. They also wanted to charge us for a third person because our friend had visited our room. We asked if we could leave our baggage only for a few hours upon checkout, and were shown a public hallway in which to leave our things and told the hotel was not responsible for any stolen items. Upon return to the hotel to collect our bags, we asked if the hotel staff would phone a cab for us. I was handed the phone, with which I did not have the code to dial out of the hotel and was provided no assistance. We ended up using a public phone elsewhere because of the staff's refusal to assist us in our call. Overall, I would not recommend Hotel Vysehrad unless you want to feel very uncomfortable.

I think that Hotel Vysehrad's slightly less than central location really added to its charm. Our room was more than ample, clean, and comfortable. Our window faced the front of the hotel, so admittedly, our view was ...more inspiring...than those on the other side. But above all, it was the staff that made it more fun to stay there. Very friendly and helpful. And because it's best to avoid random cabs, all we had to do was call the hotel from wherever we were, and they'd send a cab for us. Sure, they got some kickbacks, but it was cheaper than getting ripped off; the peace of mind alone was worth it. Also, because it's in an outlying neighborhood (about 20 minutes away from the Old Town by foot and Metro), you get a little taste of real-life Prague that you might not get if you don't venture beyond the city center. The Hotel Vysehrad was a played a big part in making our 5-day stay in Prague a success!
