“Fantastic location, but...”
Reviewed April 16, 2013

Well located very close to Charles Bridge in Mala Strana, this boutique hotel claims 4 stars. The staff were welcoming, and spoke good english. The downstairs has a small lounge, but no bar or other facilities, the lift is rickety, the rooms a good size but basically appointed. The painted ceilings are a nice touch, but they get boring after a while since lighting is dim and the tv only has one english language channel - BBC World News. The cleaning of the room was touch and go - the bathroom was cleaned, the beds were made and that was it. Breakfast is basic buffet - if you want hot food get there early, otherwise it will be dried out or non-existent. The hotel is really a two star city centre hotel, that could do better

Solid, old furniture, massive exposed beams hand-painted with flowers, a roomy ensuite, double doors leading to the bedroom with a small private entry area. What a treat! Add a great breakfast, courteous staff and an ideal location, just 100m or so from Prague's famous bridge in an area dotted with eateries, overlooked by the castle on the hill, and you have photo opps at every corner. Arrange to be picked up by a car from the hotel beforehand, if you come by bus or train and you have heard some of the stories about rogue taxi drivers. The private museum in the ground of the castle is a real treat - original manuscripts by Beethoven, priceless paintings and more.

Room Tip: Our room looked out to the street running parallel to the Main Street, so it was nice and quiet.

I really wish I could review this hotel, but that would require staying there, which was my intention. You see, when we were arrived, we were told that there was a "problem with the pipes" on our floor and that we'd be shuttled across town to another hotel owned by the same manager. We asked them to explain the nature of the pipe issue, and they said that it was too "technical" of a problem for them to explain. They also refused to show us the allegedly affected floor. (But you should demand that if they tell you the same thing). Not just that, but the second hotel was no where NEAR the first one, and in a far less attractive location. Instead of being next on the historic medieval castle streets, it was in a busy, modern area, surrounded by construction and graffiti. What's worse - they kept insisting that we didn't know what we were talking about and that this was a better location than the last place. (TIP: Call your trip booking agency - be it Hotels.com, Expedia, etc - and get your refund through them. The staff will make you feel awful about it, but stand your ground and you WILL get your money back! Besides, the exchange rate is so good that it won't cost too much to pay their crazy international phone fees, and it's worth the piece of mind knowing these people didn't get your money). Anyway, they're obviously overbooking their historic hotel in order to fill rooms in their ugly downtown location. It's laughably transparent and utterly infuriating. Unfortunately for them, we weren't dumb and we weren't pushovers and we're certainly not going to let this drop until the hotel is red-flagged on every travel website we can find. Do yourself a favor - stay at the Green Lobster. It's in the same historic neighborhood as the Charles (the actual location), but is run by a kind and honest staff who treated us with respect and expressed great sympathy for the ordeal we'd had to go through. I have never felt more used, deceived and manipulated than I did by the staff of the Charles. STAY AWAY.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere.

Small friendly hotel conveniently located between Old Town and Castle, near Charles Bridge. Most main sites are within walking distance.
Reception staff are extremely helpful. Room and bathroom clean and well furnished.
Simple but plentiful buffet breakfast which had slight variation each day. Hot items as well as the cold cheese, meat and pastries as well as cereals and fresh fruit.
Would use this hotel again if visiting Prague.

Room Tip: Rooms facing main street may be noisy. Some rooms are small (at back of hotel)

We were here for three nights, loved the layout of the spacious room and shower room although the lights above the mirror didn't work - a minor irritation. Felt the room could benefit from having a mirror in it. We were on the first floor and found it noisy on one of the nights (Friday).
Mini bar well stocked although we didn't use it. Reception staff were charming and spoke English. Breakfast was fine and better than anticipated from some of the reviews.
Location was excellent as it was very close to Charles Bridge and easy to access the Palace and Old Town. A number of good restaurants close by - turn right out of hotel, right at end of Josefska and then walk up road to find them on left hand side - sorry can't remember the names.
We would stay here again but would ask for a room that was not facing the main street.

I spent 3 nights here in Feb '13. It's convinently located near many of the tourist attractions in Prague. I got the room for just over $50 CAD/night. It was really clean, and well kept. The bed was average. I didn't fancy the bathroom too much. I'm not a fan of the sit in the tub and hold the handle type of shower. I didn't eat there because I wasn't up early enough so I can't comment on the food. The staff was very helpful, even as much as to order me some late night food when I stumbled in at 4 am. If you don't need anything fancy and want to be within walking distance of many of the Prague attractions I would recommend the Charles
