Owner description: Prague Zoological Garden is situated near the center of the Czech capital, in a unique rugged landscape on the bank of the Vltava River. It opened in 1931 and during its existence of more than 80 years it has risen to become one of the most prestigious zoos in the world. Today, it is the second most visited tourist destination in the Czech Republic, just after Prague Castle. 4,600 animals and 680 species live in Prague Zoo. You can explore 12 pavilions and 150 exhibits over 58 hectares. The kids will love the Bororo Reserve, chairlift, mini-train, observation tower, paddling pool and Children’s Zoo. The pride of the zoo is its Elephant Valley, home to a sizeable herd of Asian elephants. The Giant Salamander House, where you can see the largest amphibians in the world – the critically endangered Chinese Giant Salamanders – is extraordinary as well; and the African House with an adjacent vast meadow inhabited by herds of antelopes and giraffes is worth your attention, too.
Useful Information: Activities for young children, Activities for older children, Food available for purchase, Stroller parking, Lockers / storage, Wheelchair access

Despite the flooding earlier this summer the zoo is mostly open and was really nice. The zoo is very large and has some real nice exhibits. Plan to spend at least half a day. For the best deal buy the Troy Card. It gets you into the zoo, Troy Castle, and the botanical garden, for 300 kc. All three are close together so makes for a good way to spend the day.

The zoo is located near the river and was recovering from the floods in June when we visited, so a number of habitats/displays were closed. There were still plenty of creative displays and a wide selection of animals. The popularity of the zoo for local residents was apparent and there were large numbers of families with young children present. There is one substantial hill and visitors should be prepared to walk quite a bit to see all of the animals.

I have been here uncountable times and I still enjoy it. When visiting, you can find small billboards with information written on it, playgrounds and a farm for kids with a possibility of riding a pony. You can also take a little train to get through the zoo but I prefer walking and seeing all the animals.

Another plus: Prague Zoo is still improving - they constructed a new pavilion for elephants and hippos. Moreover, every pavilion is themed of the place where the animals come from.

The only problem is the car park. It is not well organized and you have to pay additional 100,-Kč, which seems a little exaggerated.
