If you’re a fan of old stuff (read: archeological finds and history) this is the place to go. It’s nice that you can enter the castle grounds free of charge. You can buy different kinds of tickets for the different attractions. Except for one, The Golden Lane, all attractions are indoors. So if the weather is not so good, this is the place to go. The Golden Lane is definitely worth a visit. You just can’t buy a ticket for just The Golden Lane (clever marketing!). As I recall the cheapest ticket will set you back about 14 Euros. The different exhibitions are very nice to see. Keep in mind that the castle and exhibitions are a tourist magnet and the line to see the church (you can also enter without a ticket) can be very long. The earlier you get there, the better. Another thing to watch out for is the changing of the guards. It does happen every hour, but the main attraction is the one at 12.00 o’clock (in the summer) as this is the one with the whole ceremony. Make sure you get there at least 30 minutes to an hour in advance or you’ll be at the back of the crowd and miss the spectacle.

It was a hot summer day, so we got up early and went to see the castle. We took a tram to the back-entrance, which brings you to the castle level, without doing the long climb if you had come in from the front.

Everything opens at 9am. We bought the short-visit ticket, which includes entrance to 4 areas. Nearest was the St. Vitus Cathedral. If you don't have tickets, you could still get in, but can only admire from afar in the roped-off area in the back of church. The stained-glasses in the church are magnificent. It's a nice cathedral, but if you have seen other great cathedrals in Europe, this one is just one of many good ones. I also dislike having to pay to visit cathedrals...

Next with ticket is the Palace, which consists mostly of a very large great hall, and a smaller "Diet" hall. This took us 10 minutes to walk through. Nothing really special here.

Then it's a small church with stone walls and wooden ceiling. Again, nothing special.

And finally a small charming street that's now filled with shops. Why pay to shop? A waste of money if you ask me.

While the St. Vitus Cathedral maybe worth paying for, the other areas are not. The best part of the Castle are the views from top, and perhaps the small prisoner dungeon area. It's too bad you can't just buy ticket to the Cathedral and skip the other areas.

And BTW, all the shops in the castle charge double for drinks. I guess if you come in from front, you will be hot and thirsty, and be willing to pay any price for a drink.

We were told that the trek to the castle was horrible, but we took the tram22 and got off virtually in front of the castle. No problem. The cathedral, basilica, castle and history museum were filled with information and amazing things to see. It's almost overwhelming to visit all 10 buildings in one trip, but if you do 1/2 one day and 1/2 another day you really appreciate it.

We walked up to the castle on a very hot day and arrived just in time for the changing of the guard, we could not get close enough to see the guards but we could see the band members up in the windows and hear the music. We bought the short tour tickets which allow access to 5 areas, to be honest I feel you would be better saving the money and just walking around and looking at everything yourself. you can get into the cathedral without a ticket but you are restricted to the back. If you want to see the whole church you have to pay, I don't think you should have to pay to enter a church but that is only my opinion. The ticket also gives you access to the Golden Lane but this is just a row of old buildings converted into shops where they want you to part with more money. You can get the overall experience without paying out for it.
