Like most of Prague you need time to see as much as possible, and this Old-Timer is no exception. The castle is part of a complex of buildings. We saw it as part of a six hours whirl-wind walking tour (in the rain - not fun) and then came back to other things we wanted to see, like the Strahov Monastery which we saw from the Castle.
The benefit of a guided tour - that is if you can hear the guide - is that entry is not a problem. Take care who you use a guide - the modern way is for every member to have a receiver and ear piece and the guide speaks into a mike system that enables everyone to hear. This is definitely a better way.
