This Church, which located 7 minutes walk from the Charles Bridge. It is heavily decorated and probably will be of interest to those who like to visit churches and historical buildings.

They claim to have one of the biggest organs in Prague along with that on the Prague Castle and have daily concerts which include the organ, a violin player and a soprano / tenor. It is said that the revenues from the concert used to keep and restore this 16th century building.

We were there for such a concert. It lasted about an hour, the price was 450CZK. The music was very good, but it was not very comfortable to listen to it there. The musicians and the organ are located on a balcony behind your back. Moreover the benches are extremely uncomfortable (narrow and with some bulge on the back). It was also freezing there (even though the guy who sold the tickets outside said they had heating).

It is a nice church, but if you want to listen to organ music I suggest you do it somewhere else.

One reviewer lamented the closed gates. I asked one of the young friars that, who happened to be around, and he explained that they have a huge theft problem. On top of that, because of the brutal repression of the Church by the communists, there are fewer practicing Christians here than in most countries. So there are not as many volunteers to watch the Church during the day. Also, much of the land of religious orders was stolen, and the legislature is still drafting a bill to compensate them, so many places do not have money to hire a guide. Anyway, it is a beautiful baroque church. Two things to note are the ornate painting on the ceiling--the Dominicans battling the enemies of the Church. A bit triumphalistic perhaps, but masterfully done. Also, on the left side are two wonderfully carved wooden confessionals, with symbols of death and judgment. Very unusual, and some of the best I have seen.

St Giles looked to be absolutely amazing. The decorations in this church were massive and elaborate. The artwork was stunning. It is such a shame that they have gates that restrict any access to most of the church area – you enter and look into the church from the back through bars like a criminal. It is great to see religion providing so much for the masses…
Very sad that such a staggering church is essentially a no-go. Drop in to take a look, but as you are viewing from a distance, expect to spend only a few minutes.
