“Nice Change of Pace”
Reviewed October 19, 2012

My boyfriend and I had been traveling for 9 days through Europe (lots of eating and drinking, of course) when we decided we finally needed to do something active other than walking. We learned about the 32 km bike tour to Karlstejn Castle through both TripAdvisor and the Lonely Planet Prague book. The cost was worth the nice 4-5 hour excursion through the Czech countryside, stopping along the way for some beer, and then continuing on to the castle. Bike groups are generally small (ours was only 6 people).

Good to know: Ave provides complimentary hotel pick-up in the morning, brief orientation of the trails, bike fitting, and train tickets for the way home. This is not an expert trail by any means, easy and mostly on paved bike trails. There are a few areas where you ride through mud and rock trails, so be prepared to get a little dirty. Highly recommended for riders of all levels who know the gear functionality. You'll need them!

Thank you for your comment on Tripadvisor. We are pleased that you enjoy the trip. I would just like let others know that the longest "off-road" section between Radotin and Cernosice is under construction now and will be paved for 2013 season. Thank you. Best regards. Kotyk

“A Perfect Day Out”
Reviewed June 12, 2012

People do some crazy things on holiday. I hadn't been on a bike for 10 years but couldn't resist the allure of seeing Middle Bohemia on a cycle tour.

I'm glad I gave in - the day out with Ave Bicycle Tours was brilliant and was hands down the best thing that I did in (around) Prague.

They offer a hotel pick-up service, though if you are able to get to their office at Pod Barvirkou you get a discount. The hotel pick up was punctual, the driver friendly.

When you arrive at the office, you go downstairs for a safety briefing and a crash course on the rules of the road. You then go a few doors down to the lot where the bikes are kept. They have a variety of bicycles available, with both male and female seats. They're good, solid, sturdy bikes. You're provided with a helmet and a handle bar or pannier bag if you need one. Everyone gets a bottle of water. You have a few minutes to pedal around and make adjustments before setting off for real.

I was on the tour to Karlstejn Castle, about 20 miles away from Prague. The first 15 minutes or so, you're on public roads on the way out of the city. This was pretty scary at first, but our guide Lukasz led on and kept an eye on us.

After getting out of the city, the vast majority of the cycle is on dedicated cycle paths, some in better condition than others but all offering a good view of the surrounding countryside. It does get pretty bumpy in some places, you also get to go over a number of bridges.

The guides know of several points to stop off for a midway beer/light snack and a rest - if you're able, try and hold out to stop off in Dobrichovice. Lukasz led us to Dobrichovice Castle, now privately owned and partially converted into a bar and restaurant. It is worth seeing, especially the frescoes upstairs.

I did have a number of moments on the trip where I got a bit panicked, mostly because it had been so long since I cycled. Lukasz and his assistant were brilliant at all times - reassuring, looking out for me. They were lovely, even though I surely was not the easiest customer to deal with.

When you get to Karlstejn, you cycle up to a viewing point first, where you can see the castle in all its glory. You then bike back to near the train station to drop off the cycles. The guides oriented us so that we would be able to get the train back when we finished exploring the town (the train ticket back to Prague is included in the tour) and then bid us farewell.

The tour to Karlstejn was fantastic - the countryside is beautiful and worth seeing, especially the small cottages dotted along the river and the bright red poppies that dotted the fields and river banks.

I highly recommend this tour and this company, even if you haven't been on a bike in ages and even if you aren't super fit. It's a unique way to see the area and you'll be well looked after by Ave Bicycle Tours.

“Ave Bicycle Tours has it all.”
Reviewed September 22, 2010

We did the Karlstejn Castle on-day tour with Ave Bicycle from Prague. Our guide Kate was a delight: informed, enthousiastic, professional. While you do have to hike quite a ways from the town up to the castle, the ride to the town is beautiful and mostly on bike paths along the rivers. It took us 3 hours for the ride and that included a stop for pastries along the way. This company also offers multi-day trips in Czech Republic as well as bicycle rentals with suggested routes for self-guided trips. We were impressed.
