Nice walk up the hill to get to the monument. I didn't bother going inside as I'm not very fond of forking out money unless I know it will be really awesome. I strolled up the hill from the army museum (where entrance is free).
Just a note to those complaining about it being closed when they visited - do some research before you visit! (due to some rule I fail to understand, I cannot post the URL of the museum website, but a search engine will get you there)

If you enjoy museums with a difference this is one for you! Took Tram 9 as a little distance out of the centre. A stiff but short walk up Vitkov Hill past the Army Museum brings you to a factory like building of the Communist era with a statue in front. We arrived with not a soul in sight and thought it was closed. However we fortunately came across an attendant who in true communist fashion pointed to a closed door which was the entrance. Once inside met by stirring communist music. The purpose of this museum is to show Czech history in the 20th century. Be prepared for English audio translations not working, but this adds to the atmosphere as you go upstairs to the central hall where you could imagine communist party conferences. The cafe only had a choice of 3 cakes, nothing else, but the lady who served us was very welcoming. The pinnacle of our visit was to visit the laboratory underground which you get to by going outside and finding another entrance door. This is where staff tried to keep the embalmed figure of their first president in one piece on a daily basis. It's a must. A bit like visiting a morgue.

What a fascinating, majestic place! Our guide recommended that we visit and gave us a map of the surroundings. The view of Prague is breathtaking, and the parks below the hill are a great place to spend an hour or two taking photos or just relaxing and enjoying the view. The history of Czechoslovakia is really interesting, and you definitely get a sense of national pride when you visit. The architecture is also out of this world. We would do this as part of a walk from the Vinohrady district to the Karlin district, the route we were recommended to do. If you want a day far from the madding crowds in Prague, this is the place to visit.

Vitkov National Monument is located at the top of a steep hill and you certainly get a great view from there, but the surrounding park is well worth checking out as well.

You can avoid the steep climb up the hill by taking the number 9 tram from the city centre towards Spojovaci and getting off at Biskupcova tram stop. From there you can walk through the length of Park Vitkov towards the monument whilst taking in the views over Žižkov without the need to walk uphill. If you decide to take this route, you can also enjoy a cheap beer in the beer garden (popular with the locals) as you enter the park. Highly recommended if you are a traveller who would like to discover Prague like a local!
