Vitkov National Monument is located at the top of a steep hill and you certainly get a great view from there, but the surrounding park is well worth checking out as well.

You can avoid the steep climb up the hill by taking the number 9 tram from the city centre towards Spojovaci and getting off at Biskupcova tram stop. From there you can walk through the length of Park Vitkov towards the monument whilst taking in the views over Žižkov without the need to walk uphill. If you decide to take this route, you can also enjoy a cheap beer in the beer garden (popular with the locals) as you enter the park. Highly recommended if you are a traveller who would like to discover Prague like a local!

This is of my third time to the this monument / museum. In the 90's I banged on the closed doors wondering what was inside. Now I can't keep myself away. Some of the most painful parts of Czech history are expalined here, Names such as Klement Gottwald, Jan Palach and Vaclav Havel, Their stories are explained. Really good displays and videos. The building itself is quite magnificent. Rooftops views are amazing and the cafe is wonderful.

The monument sits on top of a hill and requires a lot of walking/ steps. The Vitkov hill has plenty of benches scattered along the paths around and up the hill. Take your time and enjoy the walk up the hill. Stop at a bench in the shade and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The actual monument is a large beautiful building. 110 kc, about $6, for entry and 50 kc for photography permit. Make sure to go to the viewing platform on the roof. There is a cafe on the 2nd floor selling drinks and desserts.
