This place was recommended to us by the inn were we stayed (Dum u Velky Boty - also fabulous!) The food is traditional Czech and outstanding! Plus, the prices are reasonable. We loved it so much, we went there twice -- something that is unusual for us since we usually like to try many different places while traveling. Try the roast beef with traditional cream sauce, cranberries and variation of dumplings!!

In this area there are many rip off bars catering to the tourist masses en route to St Nicholas Cathedral or Charles Bridge. This is not one of them. This restaurant is peopled by Czechs as well as discerning visitors so there is a clue to its authenticity. Meals are well presented and tasty from the Czech canon as well as a few European dishes. This is a very special building for Czech people, and has been beautifully restored in recent years. There is beer cellar downstairs but it can get mighty smokey down there - great atmosphere though. In late May Beseda is a host venue for Fringe Festival Praha www.fringe.cz where Fringe Festival goers party until the early hours after their fill of music, theatre and comedy....

A great spot we found to shelter from the rain. The hot chocolate is chocolicious! Blankets were a thoughtful addition in the unseasonal weather.

This restaurant is used by Czechs, themselves, and so the food, from a varied menu, and atmosphere are very local and are of great quality and at a very good price.

The staff are friendly and helpful.

It is in the town square, so you can watch the world go by and the restaurant is on the main tram route, so you have easy access to and from it.

The restaurant has two separate units one is a dining restaurant and the other a bar restaurant, so make sure that you go to the correct one for the type of meal that you want but both are excellent value, with a great atmosphere.

I think that the 'moderate' in the guidebook recommendation actually referred to its comparative pricing, but our overall experience was indeed 'moderate'. Not a particularly extensive menu. Had positively the thickest schnitzel that I have experienced in my life - I thought that the meat was supposed to beaten to within an inch of its life before being doused in breadcrumbs & fried, but perhaps I've had it wrong for all these years. Setting was a bit anodyne & lacking in character, although it was clean. Staff were scurrying about but service was not very personal. Main redeeming feature was price, but I felt that we got what we paid for & we had better experiences elsewhere.
