A newly opened hotel in the center of Karlovy Vary located in a magnificent building. The hotel provides all the necessary conveniences expected from a 4* hotel. Perfect location when considering proximity to local places of interest.

Disappointing experience.

Windsor Spa Hotel is a very new hotel that was open only since April 2014. It looks like an old historical building that has been renovated. From the location point of view it is superb, very central, close to the old town and all the tourist attractions, very convenient. However, do not expect to get a room with a view, for all the rooms with view (those situated front row facing the river) are used as treatment/spa rooms of some sort, so that all the guest rooms have only rear view – meaning looking out into a high wall without any view or whatsoever.

Since it was so new, at the time of our stay (mid April) we were the first guests for our assigned room, or so we were told.

Overall the hotel did not meet our expectation for its price and performance ratio.

To begin with, our trip was meant to be a 4-day relaxing spa vacation. We imagined we could just drop by at the spa center and check out our options and book the desired massage or perhaps treatment of our choice. At the rate the hotel was charging, we also assumed there will be a thermal / hot spring pool, if not at least just a pool or a sauna. We were fully disappointed as the hotel turned out for us to be just a regular hotel to spend the night and have a disappointing breakfast. There was no pool in the hotel, only if you book a treatment you get to immerse in a tub filled with the thermal water. I found the description of their website inaccurate and deceiving.

The hotel charges a rate per person per night, meaning if two people occupy one double room the rate doubles up correspondingly. The rate itself as I understood from their website, includes a doctor check-up and after which a series of treatment to be prescribed to you, and this option can be made available to you only if you stay for at least one week. If you stay less than that, you’d be paying the price without any of these check-up/treatment, etc. From that point of view it may be worth it to stay there only if you would like to stay for at least one week and want to go through all the series of treatment prescribed to you after your doctor check-up. I used the word “may” as this was not the case for us, we cannot evaluate whether this is really worth it.

Aside from that, the hotel was still very unorganized, perhaps a bit too new and the management still lacks the experience and the necessary feedback. Given that it is a “spa hotel”, one would expect there will be a proper spa center with a counter where you can discuss the available options, book your treatment, etc. This was unfortunately not the case. Somewhere in the hotel there were some arrow pointing to the direction of the spa, but the directions were very confusing. Sometimes it pointed towards a staircase, but then does not indicate if you should go up or down. Sometimes it points to the end of a corridor splitting into 2 paths, and again, it does not indicate which way to take. After some wondering and wandering around, we ended up in a long hallway with a whole series of doors along the corridor with signs indicating the purpose of the rooms, which appeared to be spa/treatment rooms. However, there was no proper counter where you could speak to someone. In the end we went back to the reception to check. We were taken to one of the rooms, which was not properly indicated at all, and said that we could speak to the people there. This room, by all means, did not look like a spa center. At most it looked like a canteen in a hospital, the so-called “nurse” (or so she was called) came out and said that they had no availability, as it was between public holidays they were only open from 7 am till 10 am. And the next days the spa would be closed! Interestingly when we called the hotel for reservation and spa options, this was not mentioned to us at all. The woman I spoke to on the phone just said that we could get there and check out our options and book as we wish, but did not mention that the spa would be closed most of the time during our stay, which would have likely changed our decision of staying there. Disappointing! Additionally there was not even a brochure about the type of available treatment an their respective prices.

We were by all means, not the only ones lost in the “spa center” of the Windsor Spa Hotel. One day as were going down we saw several people looking around totally lost. As they saw us coming down they asked if we stayed at the hotel and if we knew where the spa was. They were apparently not staying at the hotel but interested in the spa program. They also did not manage to find the spa center!

Thankfully, there was a Thai Massage center called Tawan just directly next to the hotel, and despite the holidays, they were still open daily from 9 am through 9 pm so we were able to at least get something there. The prices there were not cheap compared to some of the equally nice Thai spa we bumped into later just slightly out of the immediate tourist paths, but they have a reduced “happy-hour rate” for a certain type of massage from 11am – 1pm, which was rather affordable.

Now the breakfast at Windsor – it was very disappointing for the rate we have paid for. Generally there were only four different choices of warm food, and always the same. It’s some sort of porridge, oat meal, some type of vegetable pan cakes and sausages. In addition to that there was always only 1 to 2 types of ham and cheese, and one type of vegetable, two different juices (apple and orange), 4 types of cereal. The choices never changed during our entire length of stay. One day there wasn’t even any (fresh or canned) fruit available! Looking at the breakfast we were happy we didn’t book full-board with lunch and dinner included.

The room we got was much smaller than those shown on the website, although the décor is indeed similar. There was a safe available, but no bath tub, only a small shower. During our entire length of stay the toiletries were not replenished although clearly we had no more shampoo or shower gel available. For the rate of the hotel, there was also no tea/coffee making facility in the room! There were a small art gallery (just one room) and a concert hall, during our stay there was no program so we could not comment on that. Parking is available in the hotel but costs 10 Euro per day.

The overall experience with the hotel was not bad, just not worth-it for the money we spent. For the room rate we paid we expected much better service, breakfast, infrastructure, and spa options, which were not the case. There are many other hotels close by that fully measure up to that purpose at much cheaper rates.

All in all, if you would like to have just a few days of spa and sightseeing experience in Carlsbad, this hotel is not worth it. If you would like extensive spa treatment at the hotel for at least 1 week, this hotel may be acceptable but we could not judge based on our experience.
