We had 'Jon' who displayed not only a sound historical knowledge but, also, the important ability to select facts of greatest interest to a group of tourists whose main aim is to be both informed and entertained. Jon offered some very amusing anecdotes!

We had Ondrej (AKA Andre or Andrew, according to him) as our guide, and we enjoyed it much more than paid tour of the castle. He provided a great tour of the village and the castle grounds up to the garden,as well as (on request) pointers to a few of his favorite restaurants (taking great pains to note that he had no connection with them). He has a wonderfully self-deprecating sense of humor and a depth of knowledge that could take on many questions. We actually tipped him about as much as a paid tour, but we felt that he really earned it.

This is the 1st free tour we had taken & it was absolutely delightful. If you're not familiar with the concept, the tour is free & at the end you pay what you think it's worth. The young man who guided us was very personable. He was a local but his English was impeccable. He had lots of stories & legends as well as history. He also talked about recent history (his lifetime) about the separation of Czech & Slovakia, not being in the EU, etc. It is a 2-3 hour walking tour so it might not be suitable for some. But he took it slow enough that my husband with asthma & a heart condition had no problem keeping up.

Our guide Ondrej did a great job of blending concise information with anecdotal comments and humor. Already had a fairly decent knowledge of Cesky Krumlov (having visited on several previous occasions), but Ondrej did a masterful job of filling in plenty of gaps in facts & info.
