The only problem with this place is getting there. But what can they do if a trip on a highway of just 50km (odds) takes 2 hours? The same is the situation on local rail.
But once you get there, the stay is quite enjoyable. They were kind enough to offer my small daughter to have a buffet free of charge, and I saw that it was a custom with children < 10 yrs. This is a nice gesture. The rooms a good and I would recommend you to get 1 on the higher floors facing the river.

Room Tip: Either go for a weekend to unwind, or have a good nights rest while traveling back from Ganga-sagar.

I was in Punyalakshmi over a weekend and found the place highly overrated. Let me list down the negatives so that future visitors know what to expect :

1. The rooms are not worth the price (I was in a Rs 1700 room). The bathroom stinked like anything, I have not seen such a bathroom even in cheap dingy hotels. There were no outlets and thinking of a bath made me creep.
2. There were constructions going on all day long and in-spite of repeated requests, they didn't stop it. It finally stopped at 9:15 PM after ruining my entire day with loud sounds of drill machines, woodwork etc.
3. There was a bamboo machan attached to the balcony of the room offered to us. It meant anyone could come to the balcony at day or night. Was surprised they could offer that room inspite of the resort being near empty on a Friday. Once you step on the balcony, you could expect to be a greeted by a bamboo structure, so much for a resort experience !!!!!
4. The hospitality was also not befitting a resort. They never apologized for the inconvenience of the constructions in progress, almost made us feel like they were doing some favor by allowing to stay in their resort.
5. Lastly, the approach to this place is pathetic. If you want to walk to the main road, you have to pass an alley used as a public toilet and the stink is unbearable. Even if you are taking your car, the approach is something that will make you think many times before visiting again.
6. They have 2 swimming pools. The larger one has not been used for ages. The floor is slippery from non-usage, the pool is full of dirt, insects etc. The other pool is usable but too small.

Now the positives. The place offers a nice view of the river and they have some nice resting places by the side of the river where you can sit hours in the evening. The overall decor of the place is so-so. But the decor of the rooms (atleast ones priced 1700) and the overall service left a very bad taste.

As for the river-view, Punyalakshmi is great. But I think there's a bit of mismanagement. First of all, we had booked 5 cottage rooms around 1.5 months prior to our visit. However, once we reached there we were told that they have booked those rooms twice. They offered us 4 suites instead which were priced higher though at the same cost and asked if we can share since we were a family visiting together. The suites were however brand new and specially the pool-front ones had a great view. The suites we stayed were very spacious and clean and with good amenities and we liked. I am not sure of the other rooms and cottages. As for the food, if you go for veg and chicken, the food is OK types, nothing extravagant. However, if you want fish specially Hilsa/Prawn types, it is too expensive with not so high quality. So, better avoid fish.

The resort website looks as stunning as the location of the resort!!

But that's about it - look no further!!!

The service is pathetic, the staff rude and lacking the basic courtesy in running a resort!!

The food quality is average but pricey with 30% tax over the rates!!!

We were 3 families who went to spend a weekend at this place - that's one night and two days - effectively only 24 hours.

And without drinks, the cost per family was Rs. 5000 which this place does not deserve to be spent upon!!

The only saving grace and the USP of this resort is the location - bang on the banks of river Ganga - the fresh air and unlimited free space for kids to play on well manicured lawns is a delight!!

Probably that's the only reason I am writing this review!!!

Room Tip: Ask for river facing rooms on the lawns

We accidentally discovered this hotel on the Independence Day about 4-5 years back during a family excursion to Raichak- Diamond Harbour. We had suddenly decided to spend the day out and as a result we could not readily check in any of the hotels in Raichak-Diamond Harbour area. As we then were deciding to return home, back to Kolkata after lunch, a cycle vanwalla near the Jetty where we were having some snacks mentioned this Hotel to us. At that point of time we did not expect much from the hotel and decided to check it out.
To our surprise we found the location of the Hotel Punyalakshmi to be awesome. It was situated right on the river bank. The lawn was beautiful with benches right above the river. We were allotted Room No. 307 on the second floor. The room were clean and air conditioned and had a decent river view.
We had ordered Hilsa for lunch which was served very late. However, the food was good. The hotel neither did boast of a swimming pool nor of the Cottage rooms then. The Hotel probably did not even have an electric connection then. It ran on generators placed outside the main entrance.
We, i.e my husband and my children (son & daughter) aged 12 & 6 years respectively have since been regularly visiting this Hotel during weekends and have observed my developments, i.e swimming pool, cottage rooms, new play areas etc. However, we have been staying at Room No. 307 which is a triple bed room. The rooms are still clean. The food is good but the service needs improvement. It is always better to confirm your booking on weekends as the hotel is usually packed on weekends. Order your meals early for timely service.
It may be noted that other than the cottage rooms there is no refrigerator in any of the rooms. However, the hotel has a bar.

A grand structure... imposing landscape ....awesome river view marred by dismal service particularly room service especially at Lunch...No hotel of this measure requires almost three hours to serve lunch and more so when it has been ordered on time and is ready and left in the kitchen for want of waiters to carry it to the room...the guest has to barge into the kitchen and literally force the waiters to do the job failing which he threatens to stop any further orders from being catered to...What kind of hotel management is this? If u dont have adequate hands why cater to so many people and think of further expansion of the building. But however expansion or no expansion verbal feedback from guests will make it a one-off spot for most people. I personally would desist people from choosing this awfully mis-managed hotel

Room Tip: take a river view room in the cottage preferably room 105

Its very well located. This establishment used to be more open. But they added these bunch of new buildings. The site looks pretty good though. The view is amazing. The swimming pool is very sub-standard. Food was decent. I would really suggest this hotel
