“What a fantastic stay!”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

A weekend at Zulu Waters was just what we needed - some R&R in stylish surroundings, welcomed by warm & friendly hosts. The self-catering bungalow we stayed in had everything we needed, with a wonderful concealed pantry / wash room to store away all the food, beverages dishes etc. neatly out of the way. The beds had gorgeous linen and were incredibly comfy. The main living area is so comfortable with trendy furnishings and a great fireplace! We enjoyed soaking up the beautiful view on the balcony and the natural silence. The game drive was pleasant (Rhino, Buffalo & loads of beautiful buck) and we will definitely take up a few more activities (fishing etc.) during our next stay.

The only things missing, and I mean only, was a fridge with freezer for more storage space during longer stays and ice (which can be requested from the main house) and a bath tub. The bathroom is simple but so spacious and a bathroom-and-shower combo would really seal the deal. Nevertheless a wonderful stay and we will defnitely be returning for another happy & relaxing weekend!

My only regret was leaving after a week, perhaps a month would be better for the next trip. This has to be one of the best experiences anywhere with the utmost privacy, brilliant infrastructure, accommodation and the most delicious food - all faultless.

The wildlife is varied and in great condition and of course there is no competition with other land rovers pursuing animals as it is all there for you alone. With no major predators, there is also the great pleasure of being able to leave the vehicle and walk with the Ranger through the most entrancing scenary. The winter light was perfect, casting a broad palette of colours across the undulating landscape from dawn until dusk before the stars put on their own show.

Your time is your own to do as much or as little as you want allowing one to enjoy the tastefully decorated and well maintained lodge with its welcoming log fire or with the expert guidance of the Rangers, fishing for feisty brown trout in the river or the dams. Horse riding among the animals was a highlight for junior members of the party and although often dicussed we never quite made it to the handsome tennis court.

There is no real reason to leave the Reserve but we did to take a helicopter tour of the batlte fields of the Anglo-Zulu war. How great it was to be able to fly directtly from the Lodge with a brilliant pilot and a fabulous guide, Ron Gold who narrated the background to the war and the details of each battle with passion and brought it all to life as if we were overseeing the campaign itself.

Food can often be hit and miss in Africa but not here, every meal was delcious with great game dishes perfectly executed matched by excellent puddings which were just too good. Lunches and breakfasts were also prepared to a very high standard. A good wine list added to the overall experience.

Unfortunately photographs will never do justice to what is a very special place which is surprisingly accessible from the bijoux Pietermaritzburg Airport.

One month, no I think on balance three would be better.

The Lake Cottage at Zulu Waters is the perfect escape from city life. The peace and solitude is unsurpassed. The cottage is beautiful, stylishly furnished, has a lovely fireplace and is equipped with everything one could need. We have spent many delightful hours in the early morning and late afternoon on the veranda watching birds and game, including rhino and buffalo, grazing just meters away. There are many activities on offer, but a highlight I would recommend is a horse trail. The hosts and staff are all charming, perceptive and sensitive to guest preferences. We enjoyed our first visit so much that we have returned a few times in different seasons and every occasion has been wonderful. If you are looking for privacy, exclusivity and a magnificent setting you will find it at Zulu Waters.

We stayed in Zulu waters at I think Lakeside house for one night, what a huge mistake, should have stayed 3! This is a amazing location with game coming to graze right around the outside fireplace. Not another sole to be seen and perfect peace and quiet. The staff is super friendly and very accommodating and the self catering facilities lovely and clean. My only tip for the venue would be to keep their coffee and tea in the rooms filled up, otherwise no complaints. Lovely fireplace on the inside of the hut with huge windows to view the game and lots of fire wood supplied. If you go to this reserve, make sure to arrive early, make a indoors dinner (the Elands and Zebra were frightened away by my braai fire but still came close enough for an amazing experience) early in the evening, take extra blankets to sit outside and lots of hot chocolate and snacks to munch on while you watch the game. Also very romantic ;)

This is a fabulous venue for a private and peaceful escape. We enjoyed having the entire space to ourselves and our son and daughter in law. The staff took great care of us, the service was good but not fussy......and there was lots to see and do in between relaxing on the deck with marvellous views or chilling with a glass of red around the open fire. Exceptional main bedroom with panoramic views of the bush. Would highly recommend you go!!

Our 3 night stay at Zulu Waters was not long enough! plenty to do and see and so well looked after by a very professional and friendly staff who were local enthusiastic people with a genuine love of the place and it's wilderness.
We stayed in the self-catering cottage Nandi which was ideal for 2 couples ( or a family of 4) and we enjoyed the views and independence from the deck where we braai-ed every night.
The activities on the estate ( game walks/ drives; fly fishing etc.) were great as one had a feeling of privacy & exclusivity as there weren't loads of people and although close to a town one felt 100 miles away in the hills of the Midlands looking onto beautiful mountain scenery over rolling grasslands.
Our host and hostess were moist welcoming and happy to assist us with arranging activities. Blair Tours will definitely revisit Zulul Waters in the future.

Room Tip: only criticism is rooms are separated by thin partition stud wall, so a family is fine but for 2 cou...
