“Paradise Found...again!”
Reviewed March 30, 2010

We just returned from a glorious week stay in La Pina, our second time there. The house is so well designed...simple yet beautiful. The location is unbeatable. Wonderful trees and flowering shrubs all around, with a view of the ocean. We saw monkeys, coatis, a huge iguana (3 feet long!), an anteater, macaws, lizards, hummingbirds, and lots of birds...all from the back porch. One night Vicky cooked us an amazing meal...we just showed her what we had and she performed her magic! William, the caretaker, was his usual sweet, humble, friendly self and we enjoyed trying to speak Spanish with him...always a good, rewarding experience. Lyn was a great help from afar, before our trip...just as she was last year. Our ChangingTides tour was fantastic! Thank you Josh and Tino!! We spent an hour with a pod of dolphins in the gulf...incredible. To sum up, another perfect vacation in paradise.

Casa Bambu was absolutely incredible! Some background, we are a family of four (boy 11 years, girl 15 years) and have stayed previously at Si Como No (Manuel Antonio) and Black Turtle Lodge and Bosque del Cabo. Our trip to Bosque del Cabo sparked our interest in returning to the area, but we really wanted to find a place where we wouldn’t be so scheduled. While at B del C we hiked the Golfo Dulce trail and ended up in Matapalo and decided that we wanted to find a house in that area next time. We are beach people so staying right on the water is a dream come true for us. Casa Bambu was our favorite spot in Costa Rica so far. We had an incredibly fun and relaxing time there.

The owners of Casa Bambu have four houses. We originally wanted Casa Linda which is a bit closer to the water but it was already booked. After seeing both on our stay, I would ask for Casa Bambu again because it has two large decks (one upstairs and one down) which was nice with teens, but if I had small children or wanted a bathroom close by, I would pick Casa Linda which is all on one floor with two bathrooms. They are both fantastic with gorgeous views, just different layouts. I did not go into the two other houses but did see them from the outside and wouldn’t hesitate to stay in any of them.

As has been said in other posts, Lyn one of the owners was fantastic in providing information which is essential in making this a smooth and comfortable trip. She provided great driving directions, set up our rental car and Golfo Dulce boat tour and lists for packing, groceries etc. Read all of the info before your trip and heed her advice.
The part of this trip I couldn’t get my head around was the food situation. At home, I really don’t enjoy cooking. This turned out to be a non issue. We ate breakfast in the house every morning, on the deck overlooking the gorgeous water! We then ate one big meal lunch (Lapas Rios or one of the other lodges in the area), dinner (Martina’s) or had one of the caretakers cook, delicious! For the other meal we just had sandwiches or salad, it was perfect.

There are endless activities you can do at your own pace around the house; just hiking down the Matapalo road is an adventure. Folks from Puerto Jimenez pay for tours to do just that. The yard at the house was full of wildlife, twice a day there was a monkey parade. We saw all four species of monkeys right in our yard. We also saw lots of interesting birds: toucans, scarlet macaws, parrots and lots more that I couldn’t identify.
The water was so warm; you could literally spend all day in it. The houses come with kayaks and boogie boards, we did both! The beach right out front is great for learning to surf and lessons are provided there. There are several other gorgeous, uncrowded beaches you can walk to. We did a great hike with the caretaker William to a waterfall and swimming hole. Another day we went back to Puerto Jimenez for a Golfo Dulce boat tour for dolphin watching, snorkeling and the Animal Sanctuary, highly recommended. If you plan this trip for midway through your stay, it is a great opportunity to stock up on additional groceries and cash in town as there are no stores in Matapalo. We had a rental car so we drove out to Carate which was a fun day trip. We debated whether to get a car. We were glad we had one but it isn’t necessary. It really just depends on what you want to do. There is plenty to do within walking distance.

About the houses, they are open air (no screens but they do have shutters that close securing the house). The beds have the best netting I have seen, nothing got in!! The bathroom (there is only one in Casa Bambu) was good sized and had two sinks and a door separating the toilet/shower area so more than one person could be in there at a time.
The kitchen had a great layout and truly did have everything we needed including a blender. We had delicious smoothies for the kids and fruity cocktails for the adults every evening while enjoying our gorgeous view…heaven!! I could go on and on, just go!!

We just returned from a two week stay at Casa Bambu. Our home was La Pina. What a great place to visit with young kids. Ours are aged 4-9 and there are four of them. Every morning and evening a troop of monkeys would swing by and give us a show. Big monkeys, small monkeys, loud monkeys and quiet monkeys. Monkeys with babies on their backs etc. Our kids loved it. The house is very functional and good for a family. There were two bath rooms and both were very well kept which is not easy to do in the jungle. The kitchen is great and there is a large spot to dine. Our favourite location was on the deck in a hamock watching......the monkeys!

At one point the gas ran out for the stove and the tank was replaced instantly. We wanted an extra bed for the youngest child (scared of the dark).....boom! We needed help organizing a dolphin swim.....Lyn set us straight right away. William took us to Corcovado National park one day and that was my best experience of the whole trip. Our kids liked the beach the best. We made a fire on the beach one night and I wish we had done that more often. Swimming in the warm (84 degrees) ocean at night with a fire to guide you home is worth doing. We saw: Toucans, Anteaters, Monkeys, Cota, Iguanas, Turkeys, Sloths, Fish of all sort, Butterflys, Fire-flies, Leaf-cutter ants, Cicadas, Lizards, Geckos, Mackaws and much more. Most were spotted directly from our deck area.

Bring a good camera, flashlight, sturdy boots and a water bottle. Food is in town (22 Km away) but there is a market nearby on Fridays and a "vegetable truck" drives by weekly.

The beds are great, there i lots of hot water, the water is safe to drink, the whole thing is solar (and it all works), there are fans in each bed, fans over the deck and fans in the kitchen. Each house is quite private with an out door shower, BBQ etc. Clean clean clean. They are always cleaning. There is a very large and effective refrigerator that runs on solar power. You are free from the electronic hell that has become the modern world. There is no phone, no television, no computers, no constant harassment.......but I was able to use my i-phone at a local wi-fi (I snuck out to do this).

This is a great trip for a family with little and big kids! 5/5 stars!

This is a spectacular place to stay. It is right in the middle of everything we wanted--gorgeous beach, fabulous wildlife. The houses had everything we needed and the staff are so friendly and helpful. It was the perfect place to go with children as they could just run around and have a great time. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Our trip of ten women to Casa Bambu was truly the trip of a lifetime. The beautioful setting, the houses that were comfortable and open (virtually tree houses) the wonderful and friendly people and so much more made it a week that I will always treasure and never forget. Lyn and Kirk are warm and welcoming and don't miss a hike in the rain forest with William. The houses at Casa Bambu are lovely--nothing overly fancy but just perfect for the setting, sparklingly clean and very comfortable.

My wife and I stayed for 10 days at the end of August 2009. Firstly I have to say that Lyn the owner was fantastic all the way through the planning stage of our visit to Casa Bambu, not only did she arrange transport to and from Casa Bambu, but organised visits out Dolphin watching etc and sugggested other places to stay when we were traveling the rest of the Country. Lyn answered her emails promptly and was even nicer in person!

The house itself is stunning. No other word too use, with open views to the sea and beach, eco friendly and totally charming. We fell in love with the place.

Others have stated how good the wildlife spotting is here, it is. I saw a whale come out of the water and crash back into the sea all from the comfort of the porch in the early morning. Spectacular. And thats not even mentioning the monkeys, macaws etc etc etc.

William the manager is one of the nicest people we met in Costa Rica, although I speak little spanish, William was patient with me and helped me learn lots of spanish, by the end of the trip we were having conversations about the local wildlife and the shark he reeled in one day when he was fishing! Do the tours with William when you can, although we went to The National Park and didnt see anything (heavy rain put the animals off) it was a joy to spend the day with William learning some of his many skills. The bottle of coke and chocolate cake at the big hotel on the way back was most welcome!

Surfing, canoing, walking, sun bathing, monkey watching and relaxing all on your doorstep.

At night we watched the lighting bugs light up the front lawn whislt we sat on the porch and drank ice cold imperial, magical. Casa Bambu was the perfect end to a perfect honeymoon in traveling through one of the most amazing countries.

This is a perfect place to stay in one of the most beautiful places in the world. This is NOT a luxury hotel or resort. This IS a comfortable place for a family, couple, or group of friends to stay to relax and enjoy the incredible jungle and shores of Osa. We found the kitchen and facilities better than advertised, clean, and well-maintained. The caretakers were welcoming and helpful. Our kids even made friends with one of the local children, and had a great time climbing trees and splashing in the waves. Please do not come here and expect to be pampered, this is a great spot for those who enjoy a top-notch rental home. We documented over three pages of wildlife during our week-long stay, mostly viewed from Casa Bambu. Howler monkeys woke us up every morning and bawled us to sleep every night with their frothy groan. Spider monkeys put on a show every afternoon before dinner, and Capuchins tried some mischief occasionally on our rooftop. The last day we saw a peccary rooting around in our yard.

We did not rent a vehicle, but would consider it if we return. The taxi service was excellent, but a rental would have allowed us to explore some of the more remote areas of Osa more freely. The caretaker, Lyn pointed us in the right direction at every planning turn. Practice some spanish before coming, the locals appreciate the effort. Regardless, we found everyone welcoming and helpful.
