“We found paradise .. We did not want it to end..”
Reviewed March 18, 2015 for a stay in March 2015

I am writing this review three days out of our vacation of a lifetime .. This was a special trip as I had just turned fifty and have been to the OSA five times before and have stayed at a different Casa that was very lovely .. I was looking for a new experience with three best friends .. We all had the time of our life .. The house was beautiful comfortable and peaceful .. There are no words to describe how kind and helpful Melanie and Kim were to us .. We found a community that welcomed us with open arms we practiced yoga most mornings with the nicest people .. Day 1 we arrived to. Full moon and drumming by the local community Wow amazing .. The monkeys greeted us each morning the howlers were our morning alarm . We sailed with Melanie and Kim on there amazing sail boat and had a yummy lunch prepared by Melanie . Hiked to two different waterfalls saw toucans poison dart frogs macaws some kind of wild boar beyond amazing . We went horseback riding to a waterfall and on the beach with a sweet man named Carlos .. Everyday was truly a gift .. I would love to tell no one as this is the most beautiful place in the OSA with the most kind and generous hosts. But I need to share my experience .. Thank you for your hospitality Melanie and Kim we could not have asked for more .. Thank you for sharing your home with three girls who loved to shriek and scream at night ..Kim your a saint for putting up with us . I am sure the OSA is quiet know that the screaming girls are gone lol.. We left knowing we would be back .. We left with happy hearts and new friends .. Melanie we also left with black and blues from all our crazy adventures and we all lost weight from all the activities .. Love you guys see you soon .. Michelle .. Deanna Wendy and Kathryn ✌️✌️

“Worst night ever!”
Reviewed January 27, 2013 for a stay in January 2013

We had a reservation for 4 nights at CDR. We came in late in the afternoon but the sun was still filling the inside of the house and brightly reflecting on the wooden floor that had apparently been refinished recently. The house is quite large and has large openings almost all around. A nice breeze was coming in. In the back, 2 very small bedrooms separated by the bathroom. What a nice place! We noticed that all the openings were unscreened, which we didn't knew, but I didn't worry too much. Melanie only warned us about monkeys that could try to come inside and to check out for scorpions that might hide in shoes and clothes. This was not uncommon to us, having traveled in the Caribbean, Central and South America many times before. Then we started preparing dinner. Appliances and cookware is not recent but there is everything you need to cook.
You should know but just in case, get whatever you need in Puerto Jimenez since there is absolutely nothing you can buy around. Then at around 6:30, it was getting dark inside so we obviously had to open a few lights...at this moment bugs and insects of all kinds started invading the place. At first, I was a bit annoyed by the situation but nothing more. We shut a few wood panels down to close some of the openings, but since there were no panels for the large opening in the bathroom and that the wood blinders in the 2 bedrooms missed about half of the blades, we knew it wouldn't solve the problem completely. In no time, we had to leave lighting to a minimum. It was only 7:30...what a pleasant evening...The lighting was totally inappropriate, big white lights. It was soon impossible to do anything, there were insects everywhere, 2" spiders, 4" grass hoppers and insects of all sizes we've never seen before, what else may come in? My wife and daughter were know totally freak out. We thought we would at least be safe in our screened beds...this was before I realized the nets had holes in them and that because they were mounted on a wood frame, there were many large openings left around the mattress. Inside the bed nets, there is a white bright light for reading...please don't ever open it!...and a small fan keeping you from suffocating and making an annoying noise covering the sound of the ocean. I had to sleep with the girls, too frightened to sleep alone. A chance I had insects coils to burn. Going to the bathroom during the night was almost an expedition, insects were in every corner...Even bad things eventually come to an end, the sun finally came up. There was no way we would stay for another night. There was nothing else available around so we had to live this a second night. This time, we have closed all panels before opening any light, we have almost stayed in the darkness, I had installed our own bed nets inside the wooden frame. With no air coming in, the small annoying fan was a necessity and we had a better night, but that didn't sound like vacations at all. We told Melanie about our experience, apparently nobody ever complained about the insects before. Not a person I know would have stayed there for a second night, they would have slept in their car instead. It was not our first experience in the jungle, we've been to Nicaragua last year, in a "Open Air" all screened Eco-lodge. To me, there is no reason for not having screens in the windows, even Melanie was unable to point out one reason...Anyway, we had paid our stay in advance and Melanie felt no responsibility for not telling about the unscreened house on their website. She also knew we were traveling with a 9 y.o....so she didn't want to discuss any refund. I will learn from it : I'LL NEVER PAY A STAY IN FULL BEFORE ARRIVAL AGAIN. One word about the beach, a low tide view will definitely tells you to swim somewhere else. About the WiFi, so weak it is unusable with an iPad. Unless you don't mind at all about insects and bugs, avoid unscreened places like this one at any cost.

Management Response
Jan 26, 2013
In response to this grossly exaggerated review, let me point out that almost all of our guests state just the opposite. They're surprised that there are so few insects. (Please read other reviews). Our beds are very comfortable and the nets are well -designed and as tight as can be built, with shock cord around the base. There are no screened houses in this area because there is no insect problem. People who come here and embrace this environment love the liberating openness of the house, feeling like they are in a tree house, or a wooden ship. This being one of the most diverse rainforests in the world, it is still very user friendly. We're sad that this family didn't find this area to their liking and hope that their future vacations go better. And by the way, we surf and swim right out front often. Note: Only one louver was missing and we are replacing it. In the seven years that we have hosted guests at Casa Dos Rios, this is the first time that someone left because of an alledged insect problem.
