“nice garden and view”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2013

We spent 4 nights at Tucan Terra and had a great time. We were on the top floor, very spacious terrace with an open kitchen where the white faced monkeys regulary come when they smell your breakfast ! and the howler monkeys who live on the tree behind will make sure you are awake at 5:15 in the morning so you cannot miss the sunrise !
The rooms are equiped with mosquito nets and a small fan on top of the bed. The place is ran on solar panel but you will always have hot water as it is a gaz heater.
We would not get enough of the view overlooking the garden and the sea .
Van was a very nice host, we appreciated that we could use the kayaks and surf boards free of charge.
Matapalo is really in the middle of nowhere, not so far from Puerto Jimenez but what a road...probably the worst in the country, driving 4x4 is a must.

Room Tip: top floor for a better view

Tucan Terra was by far the highlight of our month long trip to Costa Rica. Not knowing too much of what to expect beforehand, our experience at Van's exceeded all of our dreams. The wildlife passing right through the gardens in front of the guest house was more abundant and more frequent than anywhere else we went. The birds, the trees, the plants the marine and terrestrial wildlife proved we were right in the heart of the amazing untouched nature the Osa Peninsula is known for. While your eyes are still following the white-faced capuchins, one of four different monkey species found on the Osa, your ears are distracted by the Tucans, Howler monkeys and Scarlet Macaws passing overhead.
Whether lying in a hammock listening and watching all this happen, riding the waves on a surfboard/kayak at one of numerous gorgeous beaches, or hiking through the rainforrest following a stream up to beautiful waterwalls all within easy walking distance is how you like to spend your time, Tucan Terra offers it.
But what really made our stay so memorable and makes us want to go back there every day, is the limitless hospitality shown by Van and the family of Negro the caretaker. With as much privacy as we could possibly want, we still found ourselves spending many evenings listening to Van's amazing stories, sharing his deliciously prepared dinners and sitting enjoying cocktails until well after dark. Van, thank you for everything!

We had the immense pleasure of staying at Van's for two weeks over the Thanksgiving holiday. My girlfriend and I came to Matapalo for a relaxing vacation of surf and wildlife. Tucan Terra is on the water and looks east over the Golfo Dulce. You get the most brilliant sunrises coming up over the mountains that divide Costa Rica and Panama. Being so close to Corcavado National Park, the wildlife that roams through Van's yard and surrounding area is abundant to say the least. Hundreds of different types of birds, all four types of monkey's that live on the Osa, and thousands of other critters can be seen from the deck of your room. We were lucky enough to arrive right after the new dinning area was completed and were treated to Van's incredible talents from the kitchen (the banana cream pie was especially delicious). Van has been building his own piece of paradise here for almost 20 years. He is a legend with many entertaining stories from before most tourists ever considered adventuring to this old gold mining area. He is also very helpful when you want to arrange a tour. From guided bird watching, tree climbing, waterfall repelling, to surfing, Van knows all the best guides and most live within walking distance from his house.
The property is a site to behold. His care taker Negro, along with his family, work tirelessly to keep the gardens looking spectacular. Negro's family lives on the property and is in charge of closing the gates at night after all guests have returned from the evenings adventures.
You will not regret staying here. It is by far the best private accomodations in Matapalo with the best host in Matapalo.

Tucan Terra is heaven! Incredible wildlife directly in front of us everyday. Beautiful beaches, surf for every experience level, amazing views, awesome snorkeling, diving, fishing, kayaking, incredible hiking and two cool waterfalls close to the property that you can swim under. Van, the owner of Tucan Terra, is a wonderful person. We had the privilege to try his cooking during our stay--damn he's a good chef! Van is one of the coolest, nicest, most fun guys you'll ever meet. We had a blast hanging out with him and were impressed by all the exotic animals he pointed out when we relaxed outside. While sitting on the lawn chairs right by the pool we saw toucans, scarlet macaws, turkey vultures, a million other colorful birds, white-faced capuchins monkeys, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, dolphins, agoutis and there were resident iguanas that have their own little rock castle. We also saw this monster leaf-cutter ant trail closer to his beach. My favorite would have to be feeding the white-faced monkeys bananas which we were lucky enough to get to do everyday we stayed! The snorkeling directly in front of his house was really good when the surf was flat. Plus the climate was perfect and the water was remarkably warm, soft and comfortable. We had a wonderful time on this vacation. Van's personality, the animals, the surfing, the weather, the beautiful sandy beach and the views make Tucan Terra a lodge that we would like to stay at again. The remote location and calm lifestyle there makes this probably the best place to relax on earth. We would recommend Tucan Terra to anyone.

We arrived in a party of 5 to be welcomed by Tucans and scarlet mccaws over head and monkeys making a nuisance of themselves in the trees. However, what was more noticeable was how Van (the owner) would do anything to make out stay as comfortable as possible.

In four days we experienced the real beauty of Costa Rica in a very affordable cabina right next to some world class surfing breaks (great for beginners up to experieced). The mix of great surf, stunning weather, endless wildlife and a great host made for a stay that will not be forgotten.

Van, you are a legend and we owe you big time for all the help with our car trouble!!!! Love from all the guys x

My husband and I stayed upstairs for 5 nights and loved it! The property is not named Tucan Terra for nothing. Having breakfast while watching the tucans in an adjacent tree was a daily occurance. It also wasn't out of the ordinary to watch a family of monkeys swing through the garden. We enjoyed spending time in hammocks on the almost private beach cove watching the waves and sunset. When you are ready to be a bit more active, surfboads and kayaks are available for use or go on one of the tree climbing / waterfall rapelling adventures very close by. Van is very easy going and helpful. Sounds like there are future plans for "dining in" options. We heard that Van is a great chef.
