“Perfect hardware failing software”
Reviewed April 21, 2014 via mobile

We stayed at the Amanzoe over Easter 2014. The hotel is located in a perfect setting and the property is stunning. Views over the agean sea are breathtaking.

The villas are beautiful and offer everything you need. Also the SPA is beautiful designed but not spectacular. The treatment was perfect.

The Beach club is a 10 min ride away from the hotel and only operating from May to October due to the weather, the beach itself is fine but not beautiful.

We always read and heard that the Aman experience is out of this world but unfortunately this was not the case during our stay. Some examples:

- one massage treatment we received was not to the standard at all. The pressure was low and the effect zero. We mentioned it at the reception but there was no excuse or apology

- the " do not disturb sign" is on the door. The door bell is rings and house keeping delivers laundry which is not even yours

- the "do not disturb sign" is on the door. House keeping comes into your room and cleans the villa

- at 9.00 in the morning they call you in the room, wake you up and realise they called the wrong number

- the Restaurant service quality is very low. To serve a continental breakfast it took more than 30 min. Restaurant more than half empty. Food is not served at the same time. Your partner is eating and you are still waiting

- Coffee comes out of a Nespresso machine....? In a Hotel off this standard?

- The seating furniture is very uncomfortable. It might be a part of the Hotel design but still is not pleasant. See picture.

- the main restaurant is not a pleasant place as the acoustics are really bad. We had dinner when it was half full. To understand your partner it can be difficult. This might be different I the summer when the glass walls are all open.

In general the staff is a little bit on the difficult side. If you have a request you have to fight for it. The answer is often "Yes, but..." For example, would it be possible to heat the plunge pool up a little? Yes but your pool is at the right temperature.

Also the information given from the reception staff is not always correct. For example for Easter the was a ceremony on Spetses for the burning of Judas. Announced by the reception for 8.00 pm. It took place at 9.30 pm.

I could give much more examples of this poor service. Of course there was also good service and friendly staff but unfortunately this was the minority. If you rise the expectation to be one of the best resorts in Europe the service should also be this way. It is a pity to have a beautiful hotel in a stunning setting with inadequate service. Or you could also say the service is not at all up to the standards.

Luckily this can be fixed. The other way round would not be possible.

It has taken me a while to write this review. This is one of the most incredible hotels that I have stayed at. It must have been built by the Greeks gods.........and I suspect they may even live here! The property is massive.........it's an oasis. The room was stunning. Perfectly furnished. The spa bathroom had an amazing soaker tub which has a massive door which opened onto the glorious patio with its own plunge pool. The ambiance in the room was incredible both day and nice. The bar had spectacular sunset views. Henry Gray and his wife Char Rutherford-Gray (managers) were always present and a delight to meet. I just can't say enough about this hotel so I have uploaded many pictures.

We stayed here for 3 nights in October for my girlfriends birthday. Having stayed regularly at The Connaught, that has an Aman spa, we became aware of this hotel group and on reading the reviews, we decided to cancel our already planned trip to Naples and come here instead.

We decided to get a helicopter to the resort from Athens in order to get there quicker and make most of the entire time. On the way home we took the car and next time we visit we'll most likely do the car both ways, as it was a pleasant journey with wonderful views and taking a helicopter wasn't a massive saving in time - maybe not even 1 hour, when you take into consideration waiting at the helipad to take off.

On arrival the hotel looks like a scene from a movie - it is an absolutely stunning resort that is hard to fault in any way. The helicopter lands on the resort itself and a member of staff from Aman is there to greet you in a new Land Rover, who then takes you the 30 second journey to the entrance.

The greeting we received was without a doubt the best I've ever experienced at a hotel. In fact, after staying here we decided to stay at Amandari and Amankila in Bali, yet we still preferred Amanzoe overall. After you are given a tour of the hotel, you are taken to your room which is spectacular. Each pavilion has its own private pool, which can be heated to 32° and is simply wonderful. The food on site was quality and was something that surprised us with the resort (along with all of the other Aman's), as the price of everything on site is actually very reasonable, it's just the cost of staying there in the first place that is high.

We both felt that Amanzoe offered the best value for money at any hotel we've ever stayed at. It is expensive, but they throw in so much for it that it's hard to argue with any of it. The service is so good, the location is spectacular and the rooms are so amazing that you you have to force yourself to leave them to do anything.

If I were to be quite critical, the only negatives I would come up with is that the 3 restaurants do not serve the same food from the others. The Beach Club does some fantastic sushi, yet if you want it i another restaurant up on the main resort then you cannot have it. I'm hoping they sort this out before we go again. We also had 2/3 of the days with poor weather, but not even Aman's service could fix that

We stayed at the beautiful Amanzoe in Greece for five nights during December 2013 and had a truly wonderful experience, as you come to expect after staying at many of the luxurious Aman resorts around the world. Amanzoe definitely lived up to the Aman name with impeccable service and hospitality from the warm and caring Aman staff right from the beginning when we were picked up from Athens airport and driven to the resort (about 2 hours).

The general mangers, Henry and Char, along with the assistant manager, Poppy, welcomed us warmly once we arrived and always made an effort to see us during breakfast/lunch/dinner at the resort to check how things were going as well as being a great help in organising our plans for the day.

The resort is set beautifully atop a hill amongst small Greek villages and the drive along the dirt road from the turn off of the main road is as serene and tranquil as the resort itself. The clever design and layout of the resort makes you feel as though you are living within the Ancient Greek age albeit more modern. The pool pavilions are truly spectacular and are a great size and cater for a third person with the daybed in the living area being converted into another bed. We were fortunate enough to have a pavilion with uninterrupted views of the luscious green hills flowing into beautiful blue sea water.

The main dining room where we had our breakfasts and dinners was heated by a lovely gas fire adding to the atmosphere. Our meals were superb with beautifully fresh and flaky croissants along with locally farmed eggs, house made muesli ,oatmeal and fruit for breakfast and wonderful dinners. The chef was very generous and offered to serve us a special meal highlighting the Greek cuisine, which was one of the best meals we have ever eaten.

We were fortunate enough to have daily Pilates sessions with the lovely Alexandra.

This was the first time we have holidayed in the Peloponnese and would definitely travel back to see more of the magnificent sights, staying at Amanzoe of course!

We were fortunate to spend a couple of days at Amanzo`e last May. We decided to drive ourselves from Athens which takes indeed about an easy 2 hour drive. Arrival experience is quite impressive as the resort lies on a hill overlooking the Med on one side and the Greek olive fields on the other side.

Design wise, nothing to fault. Tuttle is an absolute hotel genius and each pavilion is a little private sanctuary. Considering AmanZo`e really excels in room service we could easily spend a day near our private pool and enjoy breakfast and lunch on the terrace.

The beach Club is another facility we fondly enjoyed. Very spacious, laid back atmosphere, some nice music on the background, relaxing beach chairs, enjoyable food menu (the best across the resort restaurants). The quality of the beach itself is nothing special though, the sand that seems rather artificial and the beach is pebble/rocky. That said, this didn`t really bother us and the view of Spetses just in front is really nice!

In terms of service, we figured a couple of improvement areas were still noticeable, especially at this price point. Upon arrival we felt the pavilion was not quite prepared for a new guest arrival. Several light bulbs missing, fruit basket with 3 or 4 of pears only, no welcome card (that was a first at Aman), no (local) wine or other drink, limited flower arrangements. Perhaps there was an error made here? Also the shuttle service to the beach wasn`t entirely on par with the standards yet. We were transported in a white basic VW van and often had to wait for other guests before leaving. (or waiting 10-15 minutes in case the van was on its way). We felt this should be improved quite a bit. In general staff were very eager to please, however still missing maturity to be more pro-active or really stand out and deliver an exceptional guest experience.

Word of mention to Henry and Char Gray who obviously know what they`re doing with their years of experience and with whom we had a few enjoyable conversations and especially to the Greek Assistant Manager Poppi. She`s relatively new to Aman but IMHO has what it takes to be successful in this business and a great addition to the resort.

This hotel was a real grower. When we first arrived I thought it wasn't very special, but over the course of our 5 night stay I grew to really love it, to the extent that we're considering returning next summer. The hotel facilities were good. The pool was nice, our villa was very comfortable with a nice pool and sun terrace. The gym and spa were both great. 10 minutes away by road is the beach club which is set in a beautiful bay, serves great food and is the perfect place to laze away the days. There are also some excellent things to do outside the hotel. We chartered a boat for the day and went to a few of the close by islands which was a really memorable day out. I'd also recommend hiring a car and driving to some of the local towns and villages. There is nothing very high end, but some excellent casual places to eat and a fantastic laid back atmposphere. The only downside is the distance from the airport, although if you feel like splashing out then 15 minute transfer by helicopter is a very nice way to arrive.

Of the 17 Aman resorts where we've stayed, this is perhaps the most consistently excellent of them -- very high praise given the standards of this group.

The guest pavilions are very high spec, with superb bathrooms (two separate toilet rooms on each end of the bathroom, replete with those terrific Japanese Toto toilets) and really soothing interiors. We booked the entry-level "Valley view" rooms and we thought the view over the surrounding Greek countryside was unique and idyllic.

Housekeeping was perfectly timed and impeccable. And service standards throughout, particularly in the restaurants, was always sincere, friendly, and kind.

The food was consistently superb, easily the best I've had at an Aman resort, where sometimes the dining has failed to live up to the rest of the experience. It has been years since I have had a burger as delicious as the one served in the pool cafe.

There's a great sense of openness and spaciousness atop the hill where the resort is located, and you don't at all get that sense from the photos. The main pool is at the highest point of the resort, off to the side, and can be very peaceful.

Note that during the last week of August, when we were there, there were a large number of families and children, and some of the parents made no efforts to ensure appropriate behavior -- so at times, the pool and beach club were incredibly noisy. That's certainly not the resort's fault, but set your expectations accordingly if visiting during peak times.

The spa director and his team were also superb, as were the staff at the fitness center who provided free daily stretching and yoga classes. If you want a deep-tissue massage, I would strongly recommend Maria, a physiotherapist who travels regularly from Athens to provide treatments at Amanzo'e. Each of us thought she gave one of the most superb massages we have ever experienced.

I have two very minor suggestions for improvement:

1. The pathway from the central resort to the valley-view pavilions is not lit, making it somewhat treacherous at night. The resort needs to install lighting along that pathway for guests who are walking to/from their rooms to the restaurants each night.

2. While the treatments at the spa were world class, Aman really needs to provide relaxation space at the spa following treatments. Instead, you are instructed to put your clothes back on and walk back to your room. I really value the pre- and post-treatment experiences at spas, and it's really important to be able to relax in a dedicated relaxation room or other space following a treatment.
