This is a good site to check off if you're in town. Don't expect excitement or a big tour. This is not meant to downplay the importance of the library to Eleuthera but it's simply an old library.

On November 11, 1897, Governor Haynes-Smith took a historic walk from Cupid’s Cay, where he had landed, to officially dedicate the Haynes Library building, opening the doors for the first time. In 1994 members of the community joined forces to form Friends of the Library. Their purpose was to reopen the Haynes Library for its educational benefit to the community as well as to restore an architectural landmark and preserve a piece of Bahamian history.

In 1995 restoration of the historic Haynes Library began: the roof was replaced, and the original gingerbread architecture was restored. The building now is a designated historical landmark.

The Haynes Library has over 11,000 volumes, and a large selection of educational software.

The library is located on 1 Haynes Ave. in Governor’s Harbour, which is right next to Cupid’s Cay, and overlooks Governor’s Harbour.

Hours:
Monday to Thursday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
