“Overnight stay, Dinner and Breakfast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2013

We stayed here overnight to celebrate my wife's birthday. The rooms were lovely, and the pub, restaurant has a great atmosphere, with a great log fire near the bar. The local ales are good too, with my favourite being 'Jamie's Tipple' (after Jamie Oliver). Our meals were good and the breakfast had their very own home-made sausages, which were delicious. All in all, a great way to celebrate a loved one's birthday. Oh, and with our deal, each couple gets a signed recipe book by Jamie Oliver.

Room Tip: Please ignore pool and kids activities ratings above. My finger slipped!

My husband booked this as a Birthday treat for me. Arrived after 2 on Saturday to check in, wanted to get some lunch but unfortunately lunch is 12-2 and because of weather staff who usually does pasta and salad in afternoons was not there. We just ordered some drinks and got some crisps, then a very nice guy (sorry didn't get his name) came over and offered to get us some sandwiches, which was a nice touch. Room was very nice, lovely and warm, decor good and very clean, bed was very soft and comfy.
For dinner we had beef wellington with red wine jus (wonderfully tasty) and home-made suet pastry pie which had loads of gravy so hubby was happy! Didn't make dessert but wish we had as the pavlova looked fantastic. Very good bottle of house red wine also. Breakfast was very nice next morning. All in all we both really enjoyed our stay here and wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Stayed at the Cricketers last night after a Last minute booking on Sunday. A nice welcome after travelling through ice and snow. Nigel, the Shift manager was very helpful and took the time to welcome us. Very nice rooms and excellent food - Jamies tipple not to bad as well. Will return if we can get the same rate. Very nice

We made a special trip (almost a one hour drive) to have lunch at The Cricketers - it is famous after all, and has been so for a number of years. It is out of the way though amongst some lovely and typical Essex countryside - not necessarily the easiest place to find.
It's a lovely old building with a great atmosphere, and the staff make one feel at home as soon as you arrive. Busy but that did not prevent us from getting good service, and some good advice on wine options. We paid around GBP30 for an Argentinian Malbec which was stunning - and the wine list is certainly attractive and well chosen.
The food was good and both well cooked and well presented though it wasn't a 'Wow'. I think it fair to say that there are other gourmet pubs in and around Essex which can do just as a good a job with the food.
But we are glad we went and enjoyed an excellent, though slightly pricey, lunch

Room Tip: Booking essential to avoid disappointment.

We visited this establishment on New Years Day with the intention of having lunch. Admittedly we did not book a table. We arrived at 12:30 to an establishment that had two tables only occupied. We ordered prelunch drinks, once the money was in the till we were informed that there was nowhere to sit and have our drinks as every table was booked. We had to go out outside at the start of January and sit at picnic tables. Surely your staff should have had the common discency to ask whether we had a reservation and point out that there would be nowhere to sit and have our drinks inside or are you that desperate for an £8.00 order. The lady who served us was condescending and needs lessons in customer relations. A very disappointing experience which we will not repeat.

We spent New Year's Eve at the Cricketers in a warm and friendly atmosphere and found the staff relaxed, welcoming, attentive and helpful as well as efficient, the food excellent and promptly served - no mean feat as the restaurant was full - and our room in the main building attractively decorated and very comfortable, with a light, spacious bathroom (though the pressure in the shower isn't up to much). (The only disadvantage to these rooms is that they are not very soundproof so you can hear talking in the next room and general hubbub from the restaurant below.) It wasn't an inexpensive visit but on New Year's Eve, most places cost a bit extra. We thought it was well worth it.
(N.B Not much of a mobile signal).

Room Tip: Try one of the Courtyard rooms for a quieter room.

Although the restaurant was full on Christmas Eve the service was first rate.

The seasonal menu offered a great selection, and all dishes went down well.

Always a good sign when the owner and family choose to dine there as well.
