Devils Gap Retreat
Reviewed January 3, 2014

Our four nights at Devils Gap Retreat were relaxing and enervating. Set in wild coastal terrain just a short drive from Currie the one bedroom cottage was equipped with everything one could wish for. It even had large binoculars for perusing the cray fishermen as they hauled in their catch. Each morning we were visited by the local wallabies seeking their brekkie Weet Bix. Caroline's pottery and art work enhanced the decor perfectly. If you are seeking a get-away-from-it-all holiday this is for you.

I chose Devils Gap Cottage through King Island Airlines, it is a lovely 1 bedroom cottage with amazing views out to sea, looking due West, the owner Caroline was telling us that there is nothing between you and South America from this location and a quick check of a map at 40 Deg Lat is very true. When the wind gets up, you get to see why they call it the Roaring 40's.

We were lucky enough to get 2 lovely days, but either the wind or the sun, both allow relaxing times in this lovely little cottage, very self contained, we ate in one night and out the rest, but thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Bennett's Wallabies usually meet you on the balcony morning and night, they are very cute.

We stayed at Devil's Gap cottage for 4 nights on a long awaited return visit to King Island (after 32 years). We loved the location overlooking a very wild sea. I remembered King Island as being windy, however, it was REALLY windy the whole time we were there, which meant we couldn't hear the waves crashing on the shore (can't hold the cottage responsible for that though). The bath was lovely and deep. It took quite a while to fill, but that was expected. The fireplace was amazing and there was plenty of firewood. The cottage was extremely comfortable and well appointed, although you'd be hard pressed to find a set of matching crockery or glasses, however, that just added to the charm of the place. The decor and colour scheme was "interesting". I guess if you had to sum the cottage up in one word, you could say it was "quirky".
Overall we really enjoyed our stay at the cottage and our entire visit to the island. It is a lovely place to get away from it all and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a relaxing escape.

We chose Devils Gap for an eight day winter break and weren't disappointed. The cottage itself is certainly not four star but it is comfortable and cosy. There is a 'mountain' of wood for the fire and also an electric heater, which is ideal for first thing in the morning. The views are magnificent and you can watch the sunset over the Great Southern Ocean from the comfort and warmth of the cottage. There are many walks, from pristine beaches to shipwreck sites to very windy lighthouses. Eating out options aren't that great, however King Island produce is readily available to cook at 'home'. All in all a wonderful experience

Devils Gap Cottage is a lovely 1 bedroom cottage with views across the sea with nothing between you and South America. Our host, Caroline was lovely, meeting us at the airport and showing us to the cottage. The cottage itself is perfect, an open log fire, a pile of old records and the sun setting over the sea.

We stayed for 3 nights, the cottage is close to Currie, the main town. There is a butchers, bakers (no candlestick makers unfortunately) and two supermarkets selling pretty much everything you'll need. There are a couple of restaurants nearby if you don't fancy cooking yourself.

The cottage isn't luxury but has been artistically set out by Caroline, who certainly has an eye for unique interior design. My wife and I came here for our 5th year anniversary as a chance to get away from the hubbub (and heat!) of Melbourne and we couldn't have picked a better spot.

Highly recommended.

The Gap Cottage would have to have been the most relaxing, enjoyable and romantic locations on earth. Winter enabled us to sit if front of a cosy log fire, talk and listen to old LP Records. The local produce is excellent and the views are magnificent. Couldn't recommend this place any higher and I have travelled the world.

If you're looking for a place to relax with a glass of wine, and a good book in front of the open fire while the surf crashes on the rocks below, then this is it! We stayed here for six nights and never tired of the stunning views and the complete privacy. If you're keen, you can walk along the rocks to Curry, but we had a cheap hire car and it is a mere 5 minutes drive into town for supplies and the paper. The hire car was $70 a day, an older model sedan, and it was all that was required for driving around the island; mostly dirt roads, but well maintained.
We were in the Waterwitch cabin (the smaller of the two), and it had everything that we needed. Don't expect modern furnishings or gadgets, it is basic but comfortable - apart for the bed! After 6 nights, we were longing for a larger, softer bed with some decent pillows and linen, but that is our only gripe. The starter supplies of food were generous and the owner helpful and friendly. We were able to go down to the wharf, buy a live crayfish and cook it in our cabin. Don't waste your time though trying to source the local oysters that are mentioned in all the island blurb - they seemed to be non-existent. The best "restaurant" food that we had on the island was at the Golf Club, and it was very, very good. Check the opening hours though.
All in all, it was memorable, and we would go back to stay here.

Room Tip: Both have excellent water views, and are totally private
