I stayed there for Friday and Saturday nights just passed. To be quite honest with you, I wasn't sure what I had gotten myself into (being a 4 and 5 star girl personally) but since the budget was tight and I had to spend 3 days in Sydney, I braved it.
Boy was I surprised! It's not 5 star luxury, granted. But what it lacks in 'star' quality it makes up for the incidentals you take for granted; travel, cleanliness, comfort and friendly service.
The hotel is so deliciously cheesy it is worth to say you've been there - even once. The bed is remarkably comfortable (that's coming from a girl who has a King latex bed in Melbourne) and a tip - bring earplugs! Yes, it can get noisy, won't lie to you there. But things like free newspapers, wireless internet (we brought our laptop and it was sufficient for web surfing) and a 500MB per day limit (still pretty awesome), car park (a standard car is fine) and the room was clean. I mean I could smell the bleach clean. The sheets perfectly crisp and white and the towels were perfectly clean and no funky odours.
Yes you compromise on the view of Sydney Harbour but the train is 2 blocks up and a trip to the city by double-decker train will set you back $4 one way or $5.80 return. Not bad at all.
Sharon, the hotel owner, is a lovely, warm, cheerful lady. So helpful and always wanting to go the extra mile. I ended up going to Leichhardt to 'little Italy' and getting her some cannollis as a 'thank you' present.
Other cute and useful features in motel room - dental kit with toothbrush and toothpaste (not a bad toothbrush-soft bristles), the standard shampoo/conditioner/moisturiser (didn't use - cannot comment), a shaving kit (a shaver and small shaving cream) and a sewing kit. Not bad for 'budget'..!
Cons: phone didn't work (you could hear them but they can't hear you) and the frosted glass in the bathrooms are visible if anyone's in the bathroom at night with the light on (you shower in the mornings so it didn't really matter). The view isn't really a view (we had someone's garage).
The air con works, the place is clean, convenient, affordable and 5 minutes away from some of the best cannollis I've ever eaten! (Mezzapica - Norton St, Leichhardt).
All in all, if I go back to Sydney, I'll do the romantic 5 star hotel experience on the last 2 days of my trip but will definitely stay the bulk of my time at this cool albeit outdated motel.
