“Ticked all the relevant boxes for a budget motel”
Reviewed October 16, 2011

I stayed there for Friday and Saturday nights just passed. To be quite honest with you, I wasn't sure what I had gotten myself into (being a 4 and 5 star girl personally) but since the budget was tight and I had to spend 3 days in Sydney, I braved it.

Boy was I surprised! It's not 5 star luxury, granted. But what it lacks in 'star' quality it makes up for the incidentals you take for granted; travel, cleanliness, comfort and friendly service.

The hotel is so deliciously cheesy it is worth to say you've been there - even once. The bed is remarkably comfortable (that's coming from a girl who has a King latex bed in Melbourne) and a tip - bring earplugs! Yes, it can get noisy, won't lie to you there. But things like free newspapers, wireless internet (we brought our laptop and it was sufficient for web surfing) and a 500MB per day limit (still pretty awesome), car park (a standard car is fine) and the room was clean. I mean I could smell the bleach clean. The sheets perfectly crisp and white and the towels were perfectly clean and no funky odours.

Yes you compromise on the view of Sydney Harbour but the train is 2 blocks up and a trip to the city by double-decker train will set you back $4 one way or $5.80 return. Not bad at all.

Sharon, the hotel owner, is a lovely, warm, cheerful lady. So helpful and always wanting to go the extra mile. I ended up going to Leichhardt to 'little Italy' and getting her some cannollis as a 'thank you' present.

Other cute and useful features in motel room - dental kit with toothbrush and toothpaste (not a bad toothbrush-soft bristles), the standard shampoo/conditioner/moisturiser (didn't use - cannot comment), a shaving kit (a shaver and small shaving cream) and a sewing kit. Not bad for 'budget'..!

Cons: phone didn't work (you could hear them but they can't hear you) and the frosted glass in the bathrooms are visible if anyone's in the bathroom at night with the light on (you shower in the mornings so it didn't really matter). The view isn't really a view (we had someone's garage).

The air con works, the place is clean, convenient, affordable and 5 minutes away from some of the best cannollis I've ever eaten! (Mezzapica - Norton St, Leichhardt).

All in all, if I go back to Sydney, I'll do the romantic 5 star hotel experience on the last 2 days of my trip but will definitely stay the bulk of my time at this cool albeit outdated motel.

Room Tip: Bring earplugs!!! Also, stay on the 2nd floor as less foot traffic and quieter. We were in 210 and...

We stayed here for a week and found it to be quite adequate. It is an older motel, but quiet and very clean and well maintained. Friendly, helpful staff. This is a good place if you want to park your car and use public transportation. Bus out front and train a short 3 block walk. Several restaurants and a grocery store near the train station.

Room Tip: Some 2nd floor units have parking on that level. Since we parked the car for a week and took the tr...

Good location but not all trains stop at Summer Hill, Ashfield a better option. Noisy from 7.30 am as cleaners call out from one end to the other which carries up the building. No traffic noise but planes fly directly overhead in certain conditions. Staff friendly and helpful. Rooms average but not too much attention to cleanliness ( mouldy tiles in bathroom ). Good facilities in rooms including microwave, toaster, etc. Free secure parking a bonus. Try negotiating rates as I got the impression they vary.

We chose this hotel because of its proximity to the train station and the price.

PROS: Clean room, lots of "free" toiletries, friendly owner, free parking, easy safe walk to leichhardt shopping area (cafes, italian shops), close to city, microwave& dishes in room, free newspapers, close to convenience stores and fast food.

CONS: old and dated furniture & decor, noisy neighbours (aircon blocked mostly)

NB we have a full size car and thought the car park was fine.

I though we were so lucky to find this place, we were wrong. It beats sleeping in the car and that is about it.

The 'Queen' had an additional bunk bed and a single bead shoehorned into it where a lounge and a wee bit of floor space should have been. We couldn't even see the TV because the corner of the bunk bed blocked the view.

The room also had one of those big metal box noisy air conditioners, the kind which are so noisy you really have to chose between sleeping or sweltering for the night.

It was soon apparent walking up to the room that many of the rooms were emergency accommodation for welfare/charity cases who'd been there for a long time.

Bring your own coffee, sugar and UHT milk if you want more than one cup

The only upside is they let us leave the car there for the day, and we were within walking distance of the train station.

We stayed for as we went to the AC/DC concert at ANZ stadium. It was clean, close to public transport and didn't cost too much, off street parking was secure and FREE! I found the check in staff to be very friendly and helpful.
